54 years ago today " July 12 1962"

Brian Jones dream of forming a R & N band comes true. Little did he know what effect these 6 band members (well 4 of the 6) would have on the music world 54 years later. I wonder if anyone except Brian Jones who was at the Marquee Club that night
knew of the potential greatness they were seeing.

Wow, 54 years seems like a very long time to me. Wonder how The Stones feel. Maybe it's like a blink of the eye for them? Anyhow, let's keep rolling!

Jazz News July 11, 1962.

This is where the myth that Mick Avory played that night comes from.
Mick Avory himself has stated that he only ever rehearsed with the Stones and never played any gigs with them.

This is the reason the Stones got the gig at the Marquee - and what Charlie was up to that night.

These photos have commonly been claimed to have come from the first gig at the Marquee in July 1962 but Brian is seen playing his Harmony electric which he didn't acquire until December 1962.
This photo from the same gig shows Charlie on drums so it's more likely the photos are from January 1963.

Hold on, so they were called The Rolling Stones from the very beginning? Not The Rollin' Stones?

The second thing that's interesting is that this note clearly states that the Stones are Mick's group not Brian's.

Mick Jagger was known. Hardly anyone had heard of Brian Jones.

From Disc, May 19, 1962.

From Jazz News May 30, 1962.

Long John Baldry, not Mick Jagger actually sang on the record which was released in November 1962 as "R&B From the Marquee".

This is the very line-up, minus Mick, that played on "Jazz Club".

Dave Stevens, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Alexis Korner, Jack Bruce, Mick Jagger, Cyril Davies, Charlie Watts (hidden)

A better view of Charlie.

or for a band staying together this many years...

I mean, thats possible but I really doubt that any band will ever stay together for over 50 years again.

maybe 5, 6 10 at the most..but it just is such a different world now..

Pay them what the Stones get paid and they'll stay together. Play songs you can do in your sleep. Keep charging more for less. come on, you'd do it.

It's still what it is.....coasting to eternity. The bass player gets larger. The piano player tinkles more. The drummer knows the good days are gone. The rhythm guitar player took four years to knock off what rust he could. Only the lead guitarist, the youngster, and the singer, are still at a high level. The songs have no relevance to their current lives. They can barely remember who those people were who cut those discs so long ago. It's all a laugh to them as they cadge away their last millions for retirement and whatever super swanky rest homes they have planned. I don't begrudge them at all. They're like a really old world champion fighter that outlived all its competitors. There just aren't any young lions on the horizon to push them aside, like they did so many years ago.
