She does more dates in a month than the Stones do on a whole tour!

Might go check out the show in Ann Arbor. Not much doing here in the middle of winter, so it's a good excuse to get out of the house. Cheap, too. $22 - $44. Surprisingly large venue for her; 1700 seats, of which it appears maybe 400 have sold.

Ms. Lisa Fischer Last Night In Ann Arbor, Michigan

I saw Lisa last night at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. The place seats around 1,700 people and I would guess there were at least 1,000 people there. Not a Stones, or even a rock audience. Mostly just people who had season ticket subscriptions to the University of Michigan's UMS (University Musical Society) program of jazz and classical concerts. Many had probably seen her in Twenty Feet From Stardom, which had briefly played in this very same theater last year.

She did 11 songs, including a 2-song encore, in a show that lasted about an hour and a half. The opening number was extremely quiet and slow, with the bassist using a bow on a stand-up bass, while the drummer, using brushes and mallets, barely even touched his kit. It did set a mood, though, a foundation from which things could gradually heat up, simmer and smoulder as the show progressed.

By the second number the bassist was plucking his upright bass. On the third song, the drummer was using sticks and beginning to loosen up a little. The fourth number, a bluesy rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" featured electric bass and guitar.

"Jumpin' Jack Flash" was the only Rolling Stones song in the set, performed in a slow, subdued, worldbeat-flavored rendition that actually sounded like something you really might hear in a voodoo lounge, depending, of course, on what your idea of such of place might be.

Little Willie John's "Fever" was another highlight, and a pretty good representation of the show as a whole. Other than the Zeppelin tune, Robert Palmer's set closing "Addicted to Love" provided the only moment when Lisa flirted with anything approaching high-energy rock and roll. If that's what you're looking for, or if you need a really good Stones fix, this show probably isn't for you, but if you just want to hear some really beautiful music performed by world-class musicians, you might really enjoy it. Try for an intimate venue, though. It was good in a medium-sized theater, but I'm sure it would be sensational in a small club

Thanks for the review, Tatters. I didn't get to see Lisa when she came to the DC area not too long ago. It sounds like she is doing the music that she loves. I am guessing she decided that it was now or never to try something like this and good for her. I hope she has great success.

This is the most recent setlist I was able to find. It's from last September, but it's probably pretty close to what I heard last night, though I really don't remember her doing any Stones songs other than Jumpin' Jack Flash. The encore was a bit of Wildflower's "She's a Lady" segued into something else I sort of recognized but couldn't quite put my finger on.

Breath of Heaven

Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down
(Eric Bibb cover)

Fever
(Little Willie John cover)

Jumpin' Jack Flash
(The Rolling Stones cover)

Thanks for the review tatters, sounds like a great show. I have tickets to see Lisa here in London in May.
