OT: Guitarists that shouldn't sing...
Posted by: More Hot Rocks ()

I can't understand who told these people they could sing.

1) Mark Knofler - Sounds like he has a bad cold

2) Billy Corgan - WTF? Whinny. nasally, irratating.

3) Geddy Lee - How great would of Rush been with another lead vocalist. People might argue this point though.

Any thought?

Isn't he the bass player?

He shouldn't play either. Horrible band.

Keith, after 1999.

Just saw RUSH with Geddy in Austin.
Far cry from a horrible band...really quite jaw dropping to see that kind of dedication to each instrument and musical interplay.

Others can argue the singing, I guess I'm just used to it after that show, but what a performance!

Sadly, Keith & Ronnie...well...they kinda sing like shite now.

I am not at all happy to admit this, but it's true. Ronnie sounds like he is gargling tar and ash and as for Keef? His voice COMPLETELY changed! It's way deeper and like a different person. It's been a good 25 years since he sounded decent.

I loved both of their voices in the 70's and even 80's but now? It just makes me sad.

Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam . . .

I'm thinking about myself - not too sporty.

Keith, Ronnie, Dylan, Neil, and, yes, even the schreeching Geddy Lee are all aquired tastes and, other than Geddy, I quite enjoy their voices (most of the time).

The guitarist from System Of A Down, I know the whole band is shit, but that guy's voice is terrible. And maybe Robbie Robertson, though he wasn't that bad the few times he sung with The Band. A lot of guitar players sung great high harmonies with the lead singer, Pete Townshend, Keith, John Frusciante.

Ronnie does a great job in the vocals in I Feel Like Playing. He finally came to terms with his awful voice and stopped trying to hit the higher notes and i think it´s worked very well for him.

Last night i was watchin him in the 50th anniversary of the Stratocaster in a DVD from 2004. He tries to sing Oh La La and the result is awful.

Much better nowadays

Keith is a similar case i think. Good work in WLB in Boogie for Stu.

I can certainly see why you would not like Darin's voice as it can be a bit whinny but I must disagree about the band. System has been one of the most creative, unique, and important bands of the last decade. If you do not care for hard rock though, it may not get through to you. Serj (lead vocals) has an incredible voice (but yes Guitarist Darin sang too much on the last 2 records)

I strongly disagree. System of a down is not shit.

Bob Dylan. But he shouldn't play guitar either. Or harmonica. Sure Mick is nasal but this guy has elevated the art of singing only through your nose to a level of its own.

Funny really, that most of those mentioned have had tremendous success.

Huh, really? I like Jimi's music, but his voice does not sit well with me; something in the tonal quality of it. I don't think he's a terrible singer, but I think his songs would have been served much better with a different vocalist.

In general, I much prefer Ted Nugent songs where Derek St. Holmes is singing. When Ted sings on the first few albums, it can be pretty good. However, it seems like he gets overly crazy and screamy with his vocals on some of the later, duller albums...which I guess is his persona.
