Monkey Man/Everybody's got something to hide

Not going anywhere with this really but what d y think? Monkey Man sort of inspired as a title, based on a jumpy funky riff and the construction (the outro with screams etc) of the song?

Friggin' love it! That cymbal/bell work and drumming by Ringo is just outstanding. John Lennon at his zenith, imo. Very cool outtake clip, thanks for posting.

Monkeys seemed to be recurring theme around 1968 and 1969, they were jumping on musicians backs and demanding lyrical recognition. grinning smiley

I love Everybody's.... That sliding riff is somewhat out of time in a way in spots (intentionally?) where it's almost what, in poetry, you'd call an "enjambment." Some technically astute musician here could figure it better.

ok -- this is pretty random -- but I've thought from time to time how in the '60s the whole idea of "monkey" was more prevalent than it is today. People in ape suits as comedic trope, songs like Monkey Man and "Everybody's..." as well as expressions like "don't monkey with it," "monkeying around," "more fun than a barrel for of monkeys," dance called "The Monkey," the group "The Monkees," game Barrel Full of monkeys, chimps on TV shows. (ps - for the stickler nerds, I know chimps are apes and apes aren't monkeys)

So, it seemed monkeys were in the zeitgeist for a minute there. Why? Maybe someone more conscious and aware than I during the 1960s would have a clue.

I've been thinking about this for years (I just realized), but never had occasion to wonder "out loud" about it smiling smiley

Space Oddyssey (1968) movie, Chuck Berry's "Too much monkey business", a lot to think about. I think they sent a monkey into space before men but I may not have that correctly.

Planet of the Apes, so it goes on, probably more.

1969

Love the Toots song so much (and the Special 1979 version). The Stones' Monkey Man is one of my tip-top favorites of their songs -- I can never get over its brilliance -- its almost impossible combination of elegance refinement and abject rawness (which, to me, really, seems to embody the soul of Keith).

I always thought monkey was another term for heroine. Didn't know if that had anything to do with either one them.

Monkey Man was a black-slang term for the man that a married woman was riding on the side....

It is/was Kovach. In drug referencing it's either a heroin reference or a joint laced with coke.
And I read somewhere (think it may have been "You never give me your money" book?) that Lennon was referring to his then heroin addiction in the song.

Love both songs although MM to me is an absolute masterpiece.

Isn't the "monkey" a slang term for heroin?

monkey - Cigarette made from cocaine paste and tobacco; drug dependency; heroin

Monkey Man is revisiting the Jumpin' Jack Flash theme. The narrator's been through hell but has survived it:

"I was bitten by a boar
I was gouged and I was gored,
But I pulled on through."

"I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas."
