OT - "My Generation"
Date: October 12, 2014 22:14

How many times have I heard and seen this tune? Countless. I was watching the footage of the Who on Smothers Bros. show in 60's. Must be very early in their US career because they are unknown. The one Smothers Bro looks like he is trying to be joking with them, but comes off as an ass. And they let him know it too. You can even see it in the way they perform 'My Generation' afterwards. And it was in this particular setting that it hit me just how f*cking brilliant that whole stutter thing was.
I read that they did it on recording because the mods took all these uppers and it made them stutter and fidget. Bu whose idea was it to sing it like that?

<<whose idea was it to sing it like that?>>

Most likely Pete's, since it was on the demo.

I thought it was also supposed to be an "inarticulateness of youth" thing?

I was always under the impression that the stutter was meant to imply another four letter word...

I've read the idea came from their former manager, ace face Pete Meaden who wrote the band's first single I'm The Face.

And the stuttering was supposed to replicate both the feeling of being totally blocked up on Purple Hearts or French Blues and as Happy Jack points out, the insinuation of a profanity.

From the book "Before I Get Old" by Dave Marsh, Pete said it came from from Kit Lambert. The stutter was introduced because the "My Generation" character was supposed to be a mod blocked on pills and amphetamine abusers stammered like mad! Roger resisted the song especially this stuttering!

Wow, thanks for that demo, sweet. Never heard it before.

Maybe the stutter was put in just because it sounded cool and made the phrasing of the song better fit the music. People often make much more of something during heavy analysis than was originally intended by the artist. peace
