Is he considered as a hero or a villain in the UK?

It depends on whether you're Catholic or Protestant.
November 5 is known as "Bonfire Night" when, traditionally, an effigy of Guy Fawkes is burnt.
Kids used to make a "Guy" and then tout for money to buy fireworks hence the phrase "Penny for the Guy".

I'd say that anybody that has been celebrated for 400 years since his death was generally considered a folk hero.

John Lennon's song REMEMBER closes with the line "Remember, remember the fifth of November" and the sound of an explosion, which is a reference to Guy Fawkes Day.

The line is lifted from the opening of the folk verse The Fifth of November, circa 1870.

Don't let's go there - or this thread will have a short life.

Guy Fawkes is also the original model for the mask made famous by Anonymous and the film V For Vendetta:

You can see from Deltics' picture that it was already around for Guys in the days before decimalisation (1971).

...and he's probably the origin of the word "guy", like what Mick is a nice bunch of....
