In either case, it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in the sky and on the ground...parked cars on the side of the road, all the school kids out on the playground, workers in parking lots and on roof tops...everyone looking up, ooohing and ahhhing, clapping and cheering as the shuttle went right over our heads.

Concorde's final takeoff from Heathrow. The pilot gunned the engines to the Max and to hell with the noise regulations. I stood in my garden listening to the familiar window-rattling roar until it faded away, knowing I'd never hear it again.
