OT: Don Rickles
Date: May 17, 2014 18:49

Both surfaced in the early sixties and both are still going strong over a half century later. Both are no longer as "hyper" as they once were but are every bit as entertaining as they ever were. The Stones are the Kings of Rock 'N Roll, and Rickles is the King of Comedy.

Rickles (88) recently had eight surgeries on his leg for a flesh eating bacteria and presently is assisted by a cane. That hasn't stopped him from performing and his recent appearances on David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel proved that his mind and wit are as sharp as ever. He is truly remarkable and in my opinion is one of the two funniest characters in the history of comedy. The other being the legendary Don Knotts, in the role of Deputy Barney Fife on the old Andy Griffith Show.

The Stones (like Rickles) are also remarkable, they just keep on rollin, through tragedy and triumph. Last year at Glastonbury and Hyde Park they showed why they are still (at roughly 70 years of age) the greatest rock 'n roll band in the world. After nearly 52 years (like Rickles) they soldier on.

On May 28 (two days after the Stones return to the stage) Spike TV is going to pay tribute to Don Rickles in a world wide television special. Many of the giants from the entertainment world will be present. Can't wait for Rickles to tear them all to pieces!

Don is great. It's funny you should mention him as I was just watching him last night with Jerry Seinfeld in "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." It rarely takes him more than five seconds to mention Sinatra in any context.

Was Don Knotts ever in London in the early 40's?

He and Frank were very close buddies.

Hate Don Rickles' comedy - based on insults and cruelty.

Mr. Warmth? Mr. Potato Head? Noooooo!

He's great in Casino, btw, and Kelly's Heroes.

Yeah, Don is in a way a one trick pony. But I like him anyway. He's funnier than most of the, often pretentious, young comedians.
Basically he's leaning on the same routine he has had for ages though. Apparently, it's good enough for me...

Well, it works for both the Stones and Rickles. Leaning on the same routine for ages, that is.

In my opinion, people that are offended by Don Rickles "act" take themselves far too seriously.

That's how I've always perceived him - his humor doesn't appeal to me.

Comedy and rock 'n roll should never be taken too seriously. It's about laughter, joy, and just having a good time. When the Stones perform it's unbridled joy. When Rickles performs it's unbridled laughter. It doesn't matter if it's the same material, it always evokes pretty much the same emotions.

I watched about four hours of Rickles last night from his various appearances on the late night shows throughout the years and was laughing so hard I was crying! With the Stones I just sit with a smile on my face and get goosebumps!

In my opinion Rickles is at his best as a guest on the various late night shows.

He needs a foil, someone to interact with. That's why talk shows are his natural milieu. But the host needs to be able to roll with it. I recall his appearance on Howard Stern did not work, because they weren't on the right wavelength. His dramatic movie roles are interesting because they are the rare occasions you see him playing the serious, straight man. Even then, it's hard not to laugh when Pesci's pummeling him with a telephone.

Once you acquire the ability to laugh at yourself you have stopped taking yourself too seriously.

Yes, and all of the Late Night guys are pretty good foils for him. Stern's ego probably got in the way.

What I get from Rickles is that you need to embrace who you are, flaws and all.

I love you watched him for 4 hours and laughed your ass off--anything that does that is a blessing---I have things
like that too, that not everyone has the same reaction to. I also don't like tomatoes or strawberrys and lots of
people love them. It's not that I take myself too seriously TTT - Don Rickles sort of hurts my ears--he's too
caustic for me. You are able to hear and appreciate him in a way I don't.

Rickles' roast of Ronald Reagan may be his best moment. Jack Benny looks like he's having a heart attack from laughing so hard.

Rickles is like the Stones he doesn't have a bad show in him. That's why they are the greatest.

When I was barely into my teens I saw Don Rickles open for Johnny Carson in
Los Vegas. I thought he was quite funny but every time he looked anywhere in my direction, I cringed..."Oh no, I thought, don't talk to our table." Most of the audience felt the same way. Rickles was lethal in his humor and most amusing but he wasn't a guy you wanted to have a conversation with in public.

With regard to "insult humor", Don Rickles is one of the greatest. But he's a one-trick pony, as someone said earlier. If that's your bag, Don Rickles is an Eric Clapton. If it's not, he's abrasive.

He was good in Casino. His character was a smug-looking angry guy, though, so it wasn't a stretch. I thought he was dead.

He was better in Toy Story - Mr. Potato Head deserved an Oscar.
