An electric guitar once owned by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has sold for a record-breaking $1.06 million.

The 1964 Fender Stratocaster was sold at an auction in New York for twice its estimated value.

The price for the guitar smashed its pre-sale estimate of between $330,000 and $550,000, according to Christie's auction house.

It is the highest price ever paid for a guitar at auction.

The identity of the buyer has not been revealed.

The guitar was used by Dylan, 72, at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island on July 25, 1965.

His three-song electric set at the festival saw the then 24-year-old evolve from folk-protest singer into an enigmatic rock legend.

The set was described by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the most notable events in music history.

Did bob Dylan himself sell the guitar? Last year he said that he still owned the instrument.

"Dylan left the guitar on a private plane, and when the pilot notified the songwriter's management, he never received a response. The Strat has remained in the pilot's family for nearly 50 years, and it was authenticated last year when the his daughter, Dawn Peterson, brought it on the PBS program History Detectives". You would think that maybe Mike Bloomfield's guitar would be of interest, since his was making all the racket during that set, and because Dylan isn't exactly known for his guitar playing--for his current run of shows he doesn't even play guitar from what I've seen posted lately.

Below is a short documentary on the woman who claims to have owned the actual guitar shown in the OP.
