Cowboy Keith Richards: the Rolling Stones star’s Wild West adventure

A picture of Keith Richards on a “cowboy adventure” is among 1,000 previously unseen prints of the Rolling Stones being sold by rock photographer Gered Mankowitz.

The two men celebrated the end of the Stones’ second US tour of 1965 — a year dominated by their first international hit, Satisfaction — by donning 10-gallon hats and chaps and riding into the Arizona desert.

Mankowitz, 67, who is exhibiting prints from his personal archive of the band, said: “The rest of the guys had gone to Las Vegas to relax before going into the studio to record but Keith just didn’t like the idea.

“We had done a bit of riding during the tour when we had a couple of other breaks and we both had a big thing for horses and cowboys. We decided to go off and camp overnight and have this fantastic cowboy adventure.”

They hired a guide who claimed to be descended from gambler and lawman Wyatt Earp, rode all day, and then set up camp under the stars. “You have to understand as kids in the Fifties, we were all brought up on cowboys and Indians. America was the land of our cowboy fantasies. This was our dream come true,” Mankowitz said.

They even had a shoot-out, using the photographer’s hat as a target. “I wish there was a picture of me riding along with a hole right through the top of it,” he said.

Mankowitz, who is also known for his pictures of Jimi Hendrix, is selling the entire archive for £300,000 — although he is keeping the negatives for himself. Some duplicate prints are being sold individually, starting at £1,200.

The work includes images taken at Redlands, Richards’s country estate in Sussex.

Mankowitz, who lives in Cornwall, said: “I knew working with the Rolling Stones was going to be a turning point in my career.” He added: “They weren’t at all prima donna-ish except for Brian [Jones], who was always tricky.”

Thanks as always, bye bye johnny. A few of those pics were new to me. I bet he won't have any trouble selling the lot, even at close to 500 thousand.

This looks great. Best Stones era, photographically.
