What bands did you see in concert before Stones

At some point the Stones impressed us all to the N'th degree. We need comparisons to set standards. What bands had you seen up to the Stones, that when you finaly got to see the Stones you saw the light.

For me:

Numerous local shows in young teens featuring some local bands folks from the NW corner of NA may recall (Crowbar, Seeds of Time, The Collectors, Black Snake kicked White Snake butt, Sparkling Apple).

At 14 started solo trips to big city (Vancouver by ferry) and in order saw Chicago, Long John Baldry, Fleetwood Mac (originals), Savoy Brown, CCR, Tony Joe White (Polk Salad Annie), Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Goose Creek Symphany (if anybody remembers them).

Out of those, although I attended all because I liked them, it was the harder English R&R bands like LJB and SB that rocked my boat so by 72 (first RS show)I was set on a new course of harder rock bands (Who, Allman Bros, CSNY.....)

So I'm guessing what ever time in their career you first "got it" we have many different backgrounds?

Jimi Hendrix
Cream
Blind Faith
CCR
The Doors
The Who
*CSN&Y (around the same time as Stones '69)
...and I'm sure I'm missing a few

...and a number of support acts that became big acts.

The only band I saw before the Stones was the Band, backing Dylan--except I think they were still called the Hawks then.

This is unless you count a band of local kids called the Maniacs who played my first high school dance, but they lost the spotlight to the new Beatles album (With the Beatles) which had come out that day. We listened, we danced, we screamed . . .

Wow Aquamarine you actually saw the Band as the Hawks live? That's just too f-in cool and my hat's off to you, my disembodied cyber lucky s.o.b. friend! I myself had to wait till the mid 1990's to see the Band and by that time I'd seen the Stones numerous times. The Band I saw was better musically speaking than any Rolling Stones show ever in my opinion, and easily the best show I've ever seen! Love the Stones but compared to The Band they just don't quite cut it, and I'm just so jealous you got to see them as The Hawks!

Well, I think that's still what they were called (it was May 1966)--but like I said they were backing Dylan, rather than doing a solo show. In fact, the next time I saw them, as the Band, was also not until the mid 1990s, in Virginia. It was a terrific show, but I wouldn't personally have said it was better than the Stones--that part's subjective, obviously. smiling smiley

Aquamarine was born hip!

I saw Bob and the Hawks at Pasadena Civic in 1965, my first concert, too. Bob was high, and I was thrilled. Wow! My first druggie in concert. Loved the Hawks.

So naturally the next step was The Stones with "with singing and dancing and carrying on..." as Jagger used to say.

stonesrule, I remember seeing The Band at the civic sometime in the late '60's, in the main auditorium. People were comparing them to the Beatles at that point,

But I used to also go to the dances at the civic in the ballroom, I believe on Saturday nights while in high school. Did you go to those dances or dance/concerts as they were sometimes called?

I wish I was as lucky as you are, seeing these bands in the 60s. My first ever concert was the Stones, in 1995 (I was 19 at the time).

The Beatles, King Crimson, Yes, Zappa (the Mudshark Suite phase), Sonny Rollins, Phil Glass, Leonard Cohen, J. Geils, and so on and on.

As a child I was taken to "safe" bands, not the Stones; then in college I lived right next door to a fantastic but tiny venue
where a lot of great people played, so I got to see a lot of excellent shows -
whenever there were ticket drops all I had to do was stroll a few meters. But alas, it wasn't big enough for the Stones

Sonny Rollins outshines all the other ... I think at present ...

Where did you saw them with Dylan?

It was at the Royal Albert Hall in London, four months before I (and stonesrule) saw the Stones at the same venue.

Not that many, actually :-

The Hollies (2001)
Travis (2001)
Ronnie Wood (2001)
Chuck Berry (2002)

My first Stones gig was Giants Stadium, New Jersey, in September 2002.

The Stones in 1976 (Knebworth), and I've always been disappointed that I couldn't get to any of the 71 and 73 UK shows. So the big gigs I can remember before 1976:

Pink FLoyd (70)
Led Zepp (73)
The Who (71)
Mountain (72)
ELP (70)
Genesis (71)
John Mayall (69)
West, Bruce, Laing (73)
Yes (75)
Deep Purple (71)
Mahavishnu Orchestra (72)

+ a host of smaller UK bands

Then I found an alternative interpretation.
