Wow Aquamarine you actually saw the Band as the Hawks live? That's just too f-in cool and my hat's off to you, my disembodied cyber lucky s.o.b. friend! I myself had to wait till the mid 1990's to see the Band and by that time I'd seen the Stones numerous times. The Band I saw was better musically speaking than any Rolling Stones show ever in my opinion, and easily the best show I've ever seen! Love the Stones but compared to The Band they just don't quite cut it, and I'm just so jealous you got to see them as The Hawks!

Well, I think that's still what they were called (it was May 1966)--but like I said they were backing Dylan, rather than doing a solo show. In fact, the next time I saw them, as the Band, was also not until the mid 1990s, in Virginia. It was a terrific show, but I wouldn't personally have said it was better than the Stones--that part's subjective, obviously.

The Beatles, King Crimson, Yes, Zappa (the Mudshark Suite phase), Sonny Rollins, Phil Glass, Leonard Cohen, J. Geils, and so on and on.
As a child I was taken to "safe" bands, not the Stones; then in college I lived right next door to a fantastic but tiny venue
where a lot of great people played, so I got to see a lot of excellent shows -
whenever there were ticket drops all I had to do was stroll a few meters. But alas, it wasn't big enough for the Stones

I think the question is previous concerts, not opening acts.
