American Scientists Attempt to Sequence John Lennon's Genetic Code from the Beatle's Tooth

Published 2:30 pm, Friday, August 16, 2013

The Canadian dentist who purchased John Lennon's tooth has recently agreed to work with Penn State researchers to explore the musician's DNA. If the venture is successful, the tooth collector is interested in preserving the valuable information with the belief that it could be used in the future for cloning the famous Beatle.

Edmonton, Alberta August 16, 2013

John Lennon's tooth is going under the microscope in a US lab with scientists considering ways to extract the genetic code from the fragile specimen owned by Canadian dentist-tooth collector Dr. Michael Zuk. "I am nervous and excited at the possibility that we will be able to fully sequence John Lennon's DNA, very soon I hope. With researchers working on ways to clone mammoths, the same technology certainly could make human cloning a reality," says Dr. Zuk.

The dentist attracted attention from skeptics for purchasing the rotten molar for over $30,000 US at a UK auction in 2011, with commentary from Bill O'Reilly and Anderson Cooper (making the Ridiculist). Dr. Zuk is standing firm with his conviction that the investment could be one of the best decisions of his life. Zuk says "to potentially say I had a small part in bringing back one of Rock's greatest stars would be mind-blowing.

The molar has been busy since being sold by the Beatle's former housekeeper. It participated in a number of charitable ventures including a tour of the UK to raise awareness of mouth cancer, a line of John Lennon DNA pendants, a number of television appearances and a celebrity DNA documentary. The exact details of the scientific research is being kept confidential, but if sequencing is possible, the dentist has approved tests to be conducted to gain insight into Lennon's genes for a UK documentary on celebrity genetics.

For an entertaining interview contact Dr. Zuk directly at 403-342-0161. His website dedicated to the John Lennon DNA project may be found at JohnLennonDNA.com.

Lennon produced two offspring from his own DNA himself--so it's already proven that such things as artistic genius do not run in the DNA.

SCIENTISTS WORKING TO EXTRACT DNA FROM JOHN LENNON’S TOOTH
by Jeff Giles August 19, 2013 10:21 AM

In the oddest bit of dead celebrity body part news since Michael Jackson‘s hair was turned into a roulette ball, scientists are trying to sequence John Lennon‘s DNA using an extracted molar.

Lennon’s tooth, which the former Beatle gifted to his housekeeper after it was extracted in the ’60s, has enjoyed a certain measure of celebrity in recent years — it was purchased for more than $30,000 at an auction, with the winning bid placed by a dentist named Michael Zuk.

The enthusiastically weird Zuk, who has written a song and a book about the tooth in addition to supervising a sort of world tour for it, has high hopes for the DNA project. As he told via the Examiner, “If scientists think they can clone mammoths, then John Lennon could be next.”

Added Zuk, “To potentially say I had a small part in bringing back one of rock’s greatest stars would be mind-blowing. I am nervous and excited at the possibility that we will be able to fully sequence John Lennon’s DNA, very soon I hope. With researchers working on ways to clone mammoths, the same technology certainly could make human cloning a reality.”

To keep closer tabs on Zuk’s efforts, you can visit the John Lennon Tooth website.

The first times I heard John's dad—"the ignoble Alf"—and Julian sing, I was amazed how much they sounded like John. John's voice had more to do with his DNA than I'd have thought.

But then a comment on YouTube—below a Sean song—wasn't far wrong when it said Sean sounded more like one of the Chipmunks than a Lennon. So DNA isn't spread fairly.

Doesn't it seem seem that Yoko, Sean and Julian would have legal rights over this project? Like give their permission...

This is just a travesty of disrespect for the last person on earth who would ever want this nonsense tried on them... I'm sure The Lennon family is arming up with lawyers although I doubt at this point in time any real cloning can be done. Just an exploiter dentist, like they don't make enough money. F**k this makes me angrier by the second.... RIP John.

I think they should clone The Rolling Stones (Mick Taylor version), they should really do this, after the current band we don't have anymore a really good rock band in this world, with cloning we could keep the band alive for ever!

Except that emotions, talent, personal experience, and so on, do not get cloned--only the physical is replicated.

Experience cannot be cloned but basic talent and emotional nature or personality is there, not just a physical appearance. Of course this is a very complicated thing.

It would seem that way, yes. I don't think it would work out in any case. Even if he were to be cloned today, by the time John II was all grown up and ready to reform the Beatles, Paul McCartney would be 93 years old.

I fear this may all result in a band called The Gums of The Beatles.

I can't even imagine being so famous that you think someone who doesn't even know you will genuinely value your discarded teeth. (This obviously never occurred to Keith during the years when he was pulling out pieces of teeth during interviews and putting them in the ashtray.)

Mind blown.

And if they did it to our boys it could result in The, er, Rolling Clones.

Imagine 1 million of Lennon clones (John Leclone?) out on the street, life would be unbearable : 1 M guys with long hair, poor body hygiene, an acc guitar strapped to the back, and constant bickering about what the guy next to him has got or has done.

Yuck!
