The "What If" Game

What if Start Me Up was left in the vaults and not put on Tattoo You. In 2014 The Stones decide to do a deluxe edition of Tattoo You like Exile On Main Street and Some Girls and release a second disc of outtakes. Start Me Up is released as the first "single" from the outtake disc. Would it have a similar impact today? I think people would be wondering how in the hell it was left in the vaults!

What if "Freejack" had won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 65th Academy Awards instead of "Unforgiven"?

What if Mick Jagger pulled his head out of his butt and realized having Bill Wyman back required more than two songs, now hit the road, mate?

What if IORR did not exist? Where would this thread be posted?

....and at this point, I must say, thanks again to bv for IORR existing.

What if Brian had decided to kick the Glimmers out of his new band and stay with the blues purists?

What if they never persuaded Charlie to join?

What if ALO had decided to manage some other group?

It's always a miracle that out of the uncountable possibilities, it was our reality that actually happened. Maybe all the others exist somewhere ...

This classic tale by Harvey Kurtzman--the genius who also created MAD-- is regarded as one of the best stories from the legendary EC comics line, and perhaps the definitive statement when dwelling on the topic of "What If?"

What if someone's parents conceived them while listening to "Start Me Up" on the radio in the summer of 1981? If it was left off the album, do they suddenly go POOOF!

And what if that person was in their mid-30s now and had kids of their own? POOF? POOOF? POOOF? POOOF?

What if that person conceived in 1981 was a commercial pilot flying an airplane today, would it crash if "Start Me Up" was left off the album? POOOF/CRAAAASHHH! AHHHHHHGGH!

What about that loner kid, the friend in high school, that this person who was conceived during "Start Me Up" rescued, and saved him from despondently comitting suicide as a teenager in high school in 1994, when Kurt Cobain died? POOOF!

What about the elaborate computer software that the loner kid went on to design and develop? POOOF! What about his kids and his employees' kids? POOOF! POOOF! POOOF! POOOF! POOOF! POOOF!

What about the car the software guy's wife is driving right now? POOOOF! And if her car disappears, what happens to the money that the car salesman made when she bought it from him? POOF POOF POOOF! He's fired. POOOOF. So since he's fired, he robs a bank that never would have been robbed if "Start Me Up" had been on the album, and kills three people in the shoot out with police. POOOOF! POOOF! POOOF!

Clearly the critical reaction is the least of our worries here!

If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts, wouldn't it be a Merry Christmas?
