Moving record collection

Figured I'd ask the message board about this. What is the best way to move my record collection, me and my wife are moving about 21 hours away and we have a pretty good size collection. For our move we are driving but was just wondering what is the best way to box and move our collection.

Any ideas??

Just be careful that you don't leave them in a hot car for hours. That's how I lost a few of my albums on a long move down south. Stopped to visit a friend for a day and discovered when I got to my final destination that poor Bob Marley's Exodus was warped, along with a few other favorites.

I'd wrap them like Rockman said, and transport in a refrigerated cube truck.

But I'm fastidious.

I know milk crates are convenient, but don't they scratch up the outsides a bit...wouldn't good old fashioned cartons be better?

How many records are we talking about?

Moving/shipping vinyl records or animals or chocolate this time of year is asking for trouble.

With that being said, you might want to buy 1-2 of these and put your
MOST VALUABLE LPS in it. [www.musiciansfriend.com] It holds 70 LPs

In Google there are many advices for this; Keywords are 'how to move vinyl records'.

There is for instance a YouTube video:

I lost one box of records in a major move in 2005 -- it was most of my contemporary rock collection from
U to half of W (lost vintage Stevie Wonder). Insurance covered it but I did not have it inventoried,
and had to recreate it from memory, and also couldn't get back the actual objects themselves, which I loved.
It ended up ok, but was sad. I also lost a violin in that move. Excruciating - it was my first instrument.

I usually just pack them in boxes designed to be pretty exactly album sized - you can get them at UHaul.

good luck!

There's this great little invention called an iPod.

Just make sure they're snuggly but not too tightly housed in decently strong boxes, marked to ensure that they're kept upright rather than laying stacked.

...and like latebloomer said, keep them away from any direct or excessive heat sources.

I'm using LP sized cardboard box.
It won't cost much, but you can stuff about 60 LPs in one box.

Great idea, looking at Youtube.

Youtube is one of the best resourses for anything these days, from packing LPS to separating daffodils bulbs, to how to get "unstuck" when playing a video game, to everything and anything.

Sounds excruciating...any time I've moved, even though I'll hire movers, I'll pack and move my 'valuables' myself, which includes all music related items including albums. The thought of them dropping a box of vinyls is just too painful!

Do you need a police escort for the big move?

Put the records in a box. Easy.
