OT: Musicians who started in the 50's, 60's and 70's that released great albums in the 2000's
Date: June 21, 2013 13:15

this is sort of off topic but not really. a lot of people say musicians eventually just run out of creative juices and thats why after a few decades the great material dries up. a lot of people on here say that happened to the stones after voodoo lounge. imo there are plenty of artists who have been around decades that still can put put great albums so no excuse why the stones can no longer do it. lets make a list of musicians that started in the 50's, 60's or 70's that have released great albums in the 2000's or 2010's.

- bob dylan- love and theft (one of his best albums since the early 70's.)

- buddy guy- sweat tea and living proof (two of buddy's strongest albums ever)

- john mellencamp- freedoms road, life, death, love and freedom and no better than this (3 great albums by mellencamp in the last decade. these 3 easily rank among his best albums)

- zz top- la futura (the best thing they've released in 30+ years)

- dave davies- i will be me (former kinks guitar players best solo album and some of his best material)

i wouldn't count fogerty's WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE since it was songs he wrote pretty much in the 60's and 70's. i would include fogerty's REVIVAL though.

also good call on johnny cash. willie nelson and kris kristofferson have had some good material in the 2000's as well.

Some good choices there: I'd also include Heathen and Reality by Bowie.

please just stop. arranging 30+ year old songs or adding lyrics does not count as new material.

I'm not sure if you have to write your own material to qualify for this, but both Dion and Tom Jones are still producing very enjoyable albums.

The Beatles: 'Let It Be... Naked' (2003).

For Paul McCartney is it now a great album because of the omitted orchestral overdubs and embellishments.

Just kidding ..... winking smiley

Damn ! I forgot Gregg Allman's Low Country Blues.

Also The Union by Elton John and Leon Russell, and Songs from The West Coast by Elton John.

I also disagree with Last Man Standing; on the grounds of Kid Rock and Don Henley appearing on Honky Tonk Women and What Makes The Irish Heart Beat, as they are utterly awful, and much as I appreciate Jerry Lee Lewis, he is ill-served by Rock and Henley.

I do happen to like Long Road Out of Eden by The Eagles.

Can we also count George Harrison's Brainwashed, Solomon Burke's 2 albums Don't Give Up On Me, and Nashville, Mavis Staples' We'll Never Turn Back, Dr John's album with Dan Auerbach (I've forgotten the title), John Prine's Fair & Square, Booker T Jones' Potato Hole, Ron Wood's I Feel Like Playing, and Eric Burdon's last three albums ?

Oh, and Psychedelic Pill and Le Noise, by Neil Young are two favourites. Fork In The Road is awful though.

Agreed.

And I'd also include the Hunter albums...

Shrunken Heads

Man Overboard

When I'm President

...he is as good as he's ever been. In my mind, Dylan is the only other guy to have such a string of great records this late in his career.

As an NRBQ fan, I have to mention their recent CD, Keep This Love Goin', and also the Terry Adams/Steve Ferguson (the two NRBQ founders, with Tom Ardolino--3/4's of the Q!) Louisville Sluggers album. Both are as good as anything Terry has done during the Q's 40+ years as recording artists.

Both are worth seeking out.

Sounds like we have the same album collection Tom. Agree on all those but not been sold on John Prine yet and not heard Brainwashed. The Dr John is called Locked Down and it's terrific. Dan Auerbach brought out the voodoo in the good Dr.

Ray Davies has put out a couple of great solo albums since 2000, albums strong enough to make you think that if The Kinks ever do reform they could be more than just a nostalgia act, but an actual going concern again....
