Elton would not want to leave the stage after inviting himself to it.

Keef reportedly said later on (about Jagger´s idea to ride on stage on an elephant "like Hannibal") "I don´t work with animals! I worked with Elton, and that´s enough!"

He didn't want to leave the stage, but he wasn't allowed to play the piano. He was just standing there. After a couple of songs, Elton went back to his house, waiting for RS to arrive at his barbeque party,

I'm listening to Loving Cup and thinking that would be a great guest tune w. a good piano player, and I thought of Elton.

A used Stones book I bought covering that tour that fell apart on me had the journalist/author presumptuously listening in on the phone call when Elton basically invited himself. Some of it from rough memory:

MICK: "Hello"

ELTON: "It's El."

MICK: "Who?"

ELTON: "El!"

MICK: "Who?"

ELTON: "Elly! Elton John, you ninny!"

MICK: "Oh."

[Elton invites himself on stage]

MICK: "What song would you do?"

ELTON: "Well, I only know HONKY TONK WOMEN."

MICK: "But just that one number, right?"

ELTON: "You don't want me stealing the show, eh? Ha ha."

MICK: [dryly] "Ha ha."
