Elvis Dancing and Singing

I watched an old Elvis movie, Blue Hawaii, a few days ago and was impressed with his natural dancing ability. I am sure the movie people provided him with as many choreographers as he needed, but the natural talent was there. He moved very fluidly. Jagger too is a great dancer and moves well on stage. Both are fine singers too. I recognize that the music is very different.

This has rarely been discussed on this forum. I just wonder how much influence Elvis had on Jagger and other rock stars. For instance, has Mick ever talked about this, or do his movements resemble those of Elvis?

Hello,

Elvis is the master. No question. Mick acknowledges his influence in the opening few minutes of 25x5.

As mad as it is to say it of someone so massively famous, influential and well-regarded as Elvis; not enough people are aware of either the breadth of his talent or some of his music.

He is the master.

I am a fan.

Declan

James Brown, the man who influenced both Mick Jagger and Elvis in their dancing

James Brown started his career in 1959. Elvis began in 1954.

Re: dancing

Elvis was excellent. MJ took it to a bit of a new level though.

I always thought Mick's dancing was a joke. He's energetic, especially when he was younger, but there's not much to it. Elvis was massively talented. Unfortunately he was underserved when it came to harnessing that talent in challenging ways. 'It's Now or Never' showed the range he could achieve, but songs like that didn't make it into his repertoire very often. He showed he could take Hollywood direction and dance in his earlier movies. Who knows what he could have achieved if he'd applied himself.

It's sort of like the Bee Gees. Sure, they had different periods, but you sometimes wished they could have done some more serious, non-pop songs, just to see those beautiful harmonies put to full use. It's like the Beach Boys in that everybody loves hearing the car songs, but there's a special place for ambitious songs like 'Heroes and Villians'.

Is Elvis also in the Hobbit? Would that make Mick, Gollum?

A pity he was too self indulged, and manipulated (by the good Colonel) to have made a better go of it. That he's unmatched is amazing, given how little of his full potential we actually saw. Pure raw talent.

I like the following by Elvis:

1. The Sun Sessions
2. Elvis Is Back
3. The 1968 Comeback Special
4. The 1969 Memphis Sessions
5. The 1969 International Concerts
6. The 1970 That's The Way It Is film
7. Elvis Country
8. Elvis @ Madison Square Garden (Prince from Another Planet)

I also like some of the stuff he did in 1966, i.e. Tomorrow Is Such A Long Time, Down In The Alley, Run On, Where No-one Stands Alone. However, I do not like Aloha from Hawaii, as he is going through the motions like the movies, and it is almost the beginning of the end.

The Prince From Another Planet remaster is excellent, and Elvis really rocks at Madison Square Garden; plus, check out Lenny Kaye's liner notes.

You'd think I would take great offense to such logic. Indeed you assessed the situation admirably...

True. Got any video of it?

I also love the 1956 Las Vegas show that is often called a disaster. Money Honey sizzles so much on it you can 'hear' him dancing...thats right.

I have an outtake of Jailhouse Rock where it is just his vocal track and you can hear his shoes squeaking around on the studio floor...he was dancing all over the place for those takes...squeak, squeak, squeak...

Sorry about that Munich. Maybe I didn't treat you, quite as good as I should have.

But you were always on my mind.

These are my core picks as well - with the addition of the RCA stuff he did from '56-'58.
