Some intetresting beers on their awards list but it is heavily biased towards US brews and breweries, I suppose because it is a US website. Had a look at the UK awards and they were reasonable although i would not have put Greene King in there myself - many more brweries with better products than theirs despite its triumph at the Great Britsh Beer Festival last year.

I wasnt in the jury.

Expensive habits one has:
Seeing Stones concerts (soon)
& drinking the worlds finest & most expensive beer
(in August; the closest joint with Westvleteren-import is
- as far as I know* - three hours from me...)

* Maybe I get strangled now, by my oool´ bartender whose place
is way closer than that, maybe he has Westvleteren now...
Or at least h´s maybe trying to get it... ? Must call him.

From what I have heard the purchase quote per customer
at Westvleteren Trappistenbier´s is strictly regulated,
and each has to stand in line on locality to get his share...

Seriously there´s always a risk of trendiness here;
Chimay could win any time, as well as many British, German -
yeah, even Swedish breweries or brands.

Tonite I´m enjoying 1 (one) Starobrno.

Three brands named after strength, alcohol-wise;
"6", "8" & "12". Think I drank 8, which is said to dwell a
"smoky, malty and orange taste" (http://www.kingdomofbeer.com/en-us/dept_1b.html)

I recommend ya all to check in the other trappisten beers, no sh*t there!

Still trying to get into Belgian beers. Not sure I will ever quite get there.

At this time of year nothing beats an imperial stout for me....smooth, rich and a warmth from the high alcohol content. A brewery called Great Lakes (in Cleveland) sells a good one. Sierra Nevada makes one called 'Naarwhal'...also very good. The beer to have when you are only going to have one or 2.

Westvletern is a great beer no doubt. But not one to drink often in my opinion, it's too rich and heavy. This award may create trouble for the monastey as I understand they're already overwhelmed with consumer demand. I've been told they make just enough to cover living cost for their community. Will be interesting to see if they give in and become more corporate like some of the other Trappist Breweries such as Chimay as Westmalle. Orval would be third in that list I believe, my favorite by the way. Rochefort and Achel are a bit quiet, but also great of course. Anyone heard of Bush des Nuits? That's another great "rare" Belgian beer I would recommend.smileys with beer

Chimay is my favorite. All three of their brands.
