charmed that is ridiculous! But just as ridiculous saying Waits should sing like Mick Jagger! No he shouldn't! He should be who he is, a great cutting edge artist who never wants to pander to please the pleasers. Waits is a true American classic, up there with Dylan. He writes, performs, and inhabits his music as if a demon has temporarly possessed his soul, and he can only exorcise it by sharing it with others. Keep on chooglin' Tom, I always have time for you!
Ha...Olorin got it !!!! I was wondering how long it would take. Really dont think TW should do it...was just being silly thinking how mick sings it "Tommmmmmm Waits for No One..........."

I don't know that anyone could or should cover it. It's really a Mick Taylor song--in that Taylor's guitar really makes the track. Not sure I would enjoy hearing it so much if it had been recorded and released later. It's Mick Taylor's finest hour with The Stones, and the guitar lines he lays down just can't be improved on.
However, in terms of vocals, I've always thought David Bowie could have made this song one of his own.
Have you heard Mick Taylor's 2001 acoustic version? Vocally, Dutch singer Erwin Nijhoff does a good job of it.
Here's Nijhoff doing a version of the song in Rotterdam on 12 July 2012.
