I know that there`s been a thread before. I`ve never been a fan, but I saw the TV program in the Reelin` In The Years series. There were not many songs that I really liked, but "He Ain`t Heavy.." has always been a favourite of mine. I was amazed to hear that "Jennifer Eccles" became a hit, while "King Midas In Reverse" flopped. What a naive a taste people had then! When I heard many of their songs I honestly thought that this is the 60s at it`s worst, together with some other la-la groups with naff refrains.
An underrated 60s and 70s group, mainly because they are known for songs featuring vocal harmonies rather than virtuoso trailblazing musicianship. Like The Beatles, their main vocal influence was The Everly Brothers. I have the 26-track definitive compilation pictured below.
It contains this hard-to-find hidden gem from 1966, which only charted as high as #42 in the U.S., but was #2 in the UK and #2 in Norway, as well as #20 in The Netherlands and #30 in Germany:
This song was later covered by Linda Ronstadt in 1980, going to #31:
Here is a version by one of the songs co-writers, Chip Taylor, from 2010 in Torsby, Sweden:
