Here's some more 'til The Stones get here:

A little more clear:

Obviously Mickey didn't sing the last one 'cuz he's doing drum detail,
but I like Pete's geetar tone, really jazzy!

Yes, I didn't know John Gielgud could sing so well.

This is so fantastic. I've got tickets for the last two shows of the tour on Dec. 1st and 2nd - been waiting to see Nez live for 25 years! If I get cheap seats for the Barclays show on Dec. 8th, that would pretty much put make it the greatest week of my life.

Love the Monkees, especially the Stepping Stone tune. It is a fun one to play even in 2012. Probably the first rock band (if ya can call 'em that) that I was aware of. I always wanted to be the drummer. Those were the days. peace

Believe it or not I obtained "Steppen Stone" from the back of a box cereal... and it was not a mail in deal, it was actually on the back, you cut it out and played it.

PS.... just checked myself and sure enough it looks like several songs were put out like this [www.oocities.org] [www.google.com] ... so it it true I have been eating, breathing, hearing and living rock and roll my entire life.

I remember checking the back of the boxes to makes sure the box I bought had a record with good grooves, and I guess it sounded OK.... but I didnt have a very good record player (I was a kid) but it sounded good enough to rock to. cool smiley

smiling smiley
I forget now, but I ate plenty of Cap't Crunch... and Sugar Bear was (is still) my buddy, so it was probably one of those super engerized, over sugerized cereals... I loved that crap and I remember they didnt care which one I picked out, as long as it meant I was willing to fix it for myself...

...so I always picked the tastiest (probably meaning most sugariest) one... BUT MAINLY I picked the one which had the best prize in/on them, (IN or ON THEM) (none of those mail in offers/nonsense for this kid). I loved that carp... heck I still do! And yeah I find Cracker Jack pretty damned disappointing these days... those fun ruining co@ksuckas!!

"By 1969, ( The Monkees ) couldn't sell a tube of toothpaste."

- from the liner notes to "Monkeemania", an Aussie collection from The '80s

Note the absence of Tork, so this dates around 1969. Personally, I got all my
Monkees, Jackson 5ive and ghost story cereal, not serial, singles from Alpha-Bits
and Honeycomb, as I recall. I told Mom to avoid The Archies singles, LoL, not
knowing they were Kirchner property too ...

I think these offers lasted 'til '72 ... incidentally, The Monkees were my "first" group,
since the Columbia Record Club didn't seem to have the stuff I liked that my sister
was collecting at the time, like Bowie, Deep Purple and Carole King! Dug that later.

I guess the experiment was successful enough to get Sugar Bear guitar lessons,
or is that Don K in the control booth again? Hmmm ... sure would be interesting
to compare this one with whatever "The Five Blobs" released ...

Didn't Nesmith say above during the "Daily Nightly" performance that the picture behind them
of the Moog was Bobby Sherman's? The coincidences mount to Beatley proportions ...

And of course, the record that started it all for me ... "The Monkees' Golden Hits".
Still got it, though it's largely unplayable now. Yup, got a B on that lil' math quiz,
Mom cut out the boxtops, sent in her $2 and got it in the mail six weeks later.
So, cereal and $2 created a R'n'R monster. You too, I'll bet.

I have vague memories of cutting out that Sugar Bears recording. Did they have a hit or something that wasn't on that cereal box record? The tune titles don't sound familiar but I'm sure I was a fan at one time.

That is some great technology putting the records on the friggin cereal boxes. Some advertising dude deserves big kudosfor that that one.

DooBee Bear definately looks a bit stoned, perfect time to indulge in a bit of Sugar Smacks. lol Funny how liberal everyone was back then. Can't imagine someone pulling that off on a kids cereal box these days. Now the advertising is likely much more subconscious and utterly effective...

Now they call them Honey Smacks because "Sugar" became such a bad thing. I don't doubt the sugar plus honey content is still at an all time high. peace

peace

I think that "The Sugar Bears" was just another one-off in the Kirchner mold.
The guy who was billed as "The Archies" also was hustled as "The Cuff Links",
don't remember the hit attached to the name offhand.

It was a stroke of mad genius to print singles on boxes ... kinda a forerunner
of our modern 3D printers. But I think the REAL madness is rebranding sugared
cereals as more "natural" just by turning names around. As if people are that
stupid. Mebbe they are. I think the singles idea was a natural extension of
literally milking that last drop out of bubble gum bands, which The Monkees,
well at least some of their catalog, can be categorized as.

Springsteen's buddy Little Steven wants the government to ban sugar. I kid you not.
You can look it up. I'm not gonna post it here.

Speaking of records on cereal boxes, I wonder how they recorded the sales, royalties and such. I wonder if it was a deal worked out beforehand. How do you know how many were sold? Did they do it just from returns? I remember a great one I got from National Geographic many years ago about the space program.

My favorite "record included" was a short Jimi Hendrix demo that was included in Musician magazine in the 90's. It was an acoustic jam that I loved, can't remeber which one but it has probably been released by Experience Hendrix since then.

I wonder what happened to the Hendrix estate since Paul Allen took on the old crew and got the estate transferred to Jaime Hendrix, et al? Someone is still making a bundle of cash. peace
