OT: Procol Harum's 1st: The Story Behind the Missing Stereo Masters.

No, I dunno. You? HOW COULD THESE POSSIBLY GO MISSING.

In related non-news, folks with software have nicely reproduced mock "stereo" versions.

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" itself is purported to have a stereo mix out there, haven't heard it.

I was a huge Procol Harum fan and never got to see them in c0ncert until the last few years...though the current incarnation boasts only Gary Brooker from the 60s/70s lineups. I was more of a fan of their 70s output, from Home to Exotic Birds and Fruit.

Most of the first record was not all that great...maybe it will stay missing (with the exception of AWSOP, of course).

I love Procol!!! Almost all of their albums are true classics: Shine on brightly, A salty dog, Home, Live, Grand Hotel and Exotic Birds.

There's an alternate stereo version of AWSOP in some reissues, but there's no stereo master as far as I know.

Buffalo: Disagree about that 1st LP. Great imagery. The Best. "Cap'n Clack", OK,
we can agree that was a throwaway, but that was a fad in '67. The Yardbirds, Traffic,
Cream all had joke songs on their LPs that year.

Saw 'em for their "Prodigal Stranger" reunion at Toad's Place in New Haven with
Brooker and Fisher in attendance. Methinx Who and Floyd backup guitarist Tim Renwick
played Trower's parts whereas BJ Wilson had by then left the building. GREAT show,
with one memorable acapella moment: Brooker simulating a sax!

Anudder oddity: a bubble machine for "Pale"! Lawrence Welk on Vitamin A?

A Salty Dog, both the track and the album, is amazing!

... sure wish Brooker sang "The Wreck of the Hesperus" though.

Back in the day, I wore out the "Shine on Brightly" and "Salty Dog" LP's. Brilliant musical structure, mind-blowing lyrics, and the big B3 sound, with Brooker's signature voice. Still love to hear AWSOP and Homburg.

Saw them a couple of years ago (Brooker the only original) and they put on a great show. Saw them again in August and, I have to say, they seem to have lost a step. I know that Gary Brooker was suffering from a cold, but they sounded like a Procol cover band at times. Still, one of my favorites of all time, and in the 60's and 70's one of the greatest live bands.

thumbs up

It's their best album. There's a great clip of them doing it on Beat Club in 69.

But I really love the 74 single Strong As Samson from Exotic Birds And Fruit which was more or less their last hurrah. If you don't know it, check it out.

The 30th Anniversary 3CD boxed set contains an excellent stereo alternate take of AWSOP. The set also includes a mono instrumental version of the master take.

There is an out-fake version in stereo at this address:

When I saw them this Summer, Gary Brooker mentioned that he had just been notified the AWSOP was in the top 100 again in England. I'm sure it must be as a download...maybe a new generation discovering it.

Stereo is over-rated anyway. Give me Mono and well done 5.1 Surround mixes and I'll be fine. peace
