I am looking for the best slow to mid-tempo, haunting / eerie / sexy songs by: the Zombies, the Kinks, Edgar Broughton & Moby Grape.

( Re: Zombies, besides Time of the Season & She's Not There )

Any (specific) recommendations?

I'm so glad to hear from a Zombies fan. Just days ago, I pulled out my 2-disc Decca Zombies collection and uploaded to my iPod.

Here's a great mid-60s tune from the film Bunny Lake Is Missing, called Just Out Of Reach.

This Zombies original from 1965 was written by bassist Chris White and became a top 20 hit for California pop rockers People in 1968.

This song Ray Davies wrote for British pop artist Dave Berry in 1965. The only Kinks version appears on their BBC collection.

Luna, making a Halloween compilation by chance? cool smiley

The Zombies: "Smokey Day" ( actually an early Argent tune but included on Zombie comps ),
"Beechwood Park", "Butcher's Tale", and "Walking in the Sun" for being a great bridge
between their old and new styles.

Moby Grape: I'm not too versed here, but I'm partial to "Someday".

The Kinks: "Big Black Smoke" captures London back when coal was king.

The Zombies Decca anthology mentioned above contains 48 tracks, well worth owning.

In this collection can be found this song (another Chris White composition):

Yes, good suggestion there. I was just pulling out my copy of Something Else when you posted. I would suggest from that album End Of The Season as well, with Ray Davies going into his best Vaudeville 1920s vocal mode.

If indeed you are creating a Halloween comp, then you can look back on those rainy days in June, so hauntingly depicted by The Kinks...

We shouldn't leave out this late 60s Ray Davies gem.

And here's Ray Davies performing the song backed by a choir at Glastonbury in 2010.

Here's a couple of crackers from The Kinks. Both originally were found on The Great Lost Kinks Album.

Here's an incredible song by The Zombies off Odessey and Oracle.

This is a brilliant song by Moby Grape called Never that is said to have inspired Led Zeppelin's Since I Been Loving You

And a spooky song by Edgar Broughton Band called Hotel Room

A beautiful and haunting song, sounding very mature for their years:

And another later song from Word of Mouth that is sublime:

Good choice stonesnow - was just about to post this!

What a voice - is that Colin Blunstone on lead vocals?

Yes. They had 3 songwriters, but Blunstone was [and still is!] their de facto lead singer. The band has great vocal harmonies as well.

"Missing Persons", "Rainy Day in June", and "God's Children" are wonderful, overlooked moody Kinks' gems. This one is eerier though:

Fancy

Was it also the first use of the sitar in Pop music?

No, I believe the first was The Beatles' Norwegian Wood a year earlier.

Here is a mid-period Kinks tune from their Sleepwalker album, a song made for night owls.

The Arista-era CDs have been reissued as of 2010 by Universal Distribution, and they have been remastered as well.

If you're looking for a killer deal on those Arista CDs, check out the 7-disc box set, The Arista Years, released in 2006 on the Velvel label. Only $61.09 from CD Universe.

www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7276412

Also through CD Universe is a box set of The RCA Years, a 6-disc set for just $52.49.

Can't say enough either about the double-disc deluxe reissues of their 60s catalog on up through Muswell Hillbillies released last year on Sanctuary Records.
