I remember as kid my dad always checked the local news paper to see who died...and said to my mam you know who died? I never knew anybody.
It looks like it's my turn now to see people who I "know" and my age passing away confused smiley
Well that's life............

I wont start a thread about it, cuz I dont... but the great director Tony Scott seems to have thrown himself a very tall bridge yesterday...

Tony Scott directed some great movies.... My fav of his was "True Romance".. btu he also directed "Enemy of the state", The last Boy scout, Days of Thunder and more... he could direct some great action movies... as does his brother Ridley Scott.

.. RIP
TONY
SCOTT

thumbs up One of the few DVDs I ever bought, mainly for the alternate ending and deleted scenes bounus disc... that movie is packed with so many stars (most in bit parts)(e.g. stoner Brad Pitt is too funny) and so many great scenes (e.g. the scene with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken.... or the scene when Clarence goe to see the pimp.... talk about on screen tension).

The Hopper/Walken scene is electrifying.

This is my favorite Brad Pitt role! "Don't con-den-send me man, i'll f*cking kill ya man".

Not being American, I'd never been aware of this cultural quirk mentioned in the Yahoo link at the top:

Quote
Maya Angelou
"Black people rarely forgave whites for being ragged, unkempt and uncaring. There was a saying which explained the disapproval, 'You been white all your life. Ain't got no further along than this? What ails you?'"

RIP, Ms Diller, but I have to say, I find her style of loud, raucous, female humour ghastly.

It was her shtick, as they say. It's hard to make it as a female comic, many of the successful ones fit that style, like Joan Rivers, Rosanne Barr, and Kathy Griffin. From what I have read, she was a lovely woman who supported many charitable causes including The Society of Singers, which supports singers in need.

Phyllis had a short-lived sitcom in the 60's that was sort of the Beverly Hillbillies-in-reverse, about rich people who became poor:

That theme song was stuck in my head for years. Since they never made enough episodes for syndication, I thought I'd never hear it again. YouTube to the rescue...

"Boy, did i get a wrong number!'--Hilarious 1966 film with Bob Hope--one of the funniest movies he made and she was really a good foil for him...she has some great lines and almost steals the show from him....they made 2 other films together and both are light, funny comedies in that breezy not-too-serious '60's style without vulgarity or 4-letter words...I wrote to her in july 2008 and she autographed my DVD cover of the 1968 movie "the private Navy of Sgt O'farrell"..also sent a 8X10 glossy (yikes!) and a nice handwritten note thanking me for my service in Iraq--she was a HUGE supporter of the USO and made many trips to Vietnam w/Hope...nice lady.

Strange isn't it?
She was one of those American icons so tied into my youth.
