i remember reading in a UK newspaper sometime, perhaps the mid 90s, that the Stones were considering having a jukebox theme to their stage, so that people could (somehow...) select what songs the band would play.

anyone else remember this? did anything become of it? or am i jus' trippin'?

It did happen..sort of : On BTB they had 1 song slot that was selected from an internet list. I think it was quietly dropped by the 1999 dates

nope - they played Sway on the Bigger Bang tour, apparently because they read on fan fora that it was a most-wanted number.
on Bridges the fans were offered a short list of numbers to choose from/vote for by internet,
and the Stones played the one that either got the most votes or that they felt like playing in any case,
depending on the weather :E
