About 2 p.m. Saturday, the world wheeled up in front of Robert and Tonya Harris' mobile home in the tiny southeast Georgia town of Portal.
"The CNN truck is pulling up now," said Harris, a 47-year-old iron worker who won the equivalent of American Idol status, at least for the day, by hitting the $270 million Mega Millions lottery with a ticket he said he purchased Friday night.
What should the winner of the $270M jackpot do with the money?
Speculation around town Saturday morning was that it was his wife Tonya's ticket. Harris said Saturday afternoon it was his. "It's on me right now," he said.
He said he picked the winning combination of numbers - 7, 12, 13, 19, 22 - based on his grandchildren's birthdays. He and his wife planned to have family members over Saturday night to celebrate.
"I called my boss this morning and told him I was quitting," Harris said. "He understood." Harris said he and his wife would soon move out of their mobile home, but he wasn't sure they'd move out of town.
Harris said he plans to take the winnings in a lump sum when he drives to Georgia Lottery Headquarters to cash in the winning ticket Monday.
According to the Georgia Lottery Corp., that's about $164 million before taxes. Georgia Lottery spokesperson Tandi Reddick said she couldn't confirm that Harris is the winner until the winning ticket is turned in to lottery officials.
She confirmed the ticket was bought at Clyde's Market on Highway 80 in Portal, where Saturday morning Harris came by to celebrate and talked to an AJC reporter.
When asked then how his life would change, Harris, said: I used to live in a trailer. And I used to be an iron worker." He said he couldn't explain how he used his six grandchildren's birthdays to pick the winning combination. "I'm too happy and confused right now to think too clear."
In any case, he said, it would be the last time he used that scheme. "I don't think I need to play the lottery anymore," he said.
The New York Post had called, he said. So had reporters from Savannah, Macon and Atlanta. The hubbub was big, even by big city standards.
But in Portal, a farming town of about 600 between Statesboro and Swainsboro, a CNN crew showing up - for anything - was historic, said Portal Mayor Larry Motes.
"We don't have any movie stars from here or any famous athletes," said Motes, who was awakened at 5:45 Saturday morning with a call from the sheriff's office, asking if he knew who had won.
"We just don't make a lot of news in Portal."
At Portal Auto and Hardware, store owner Sammy Deal said the phone was ringing off the hook with people speculating about who had won.
Was the winner from Portal or just passing through? What would it mean to the town? If the winner was hugely magnanimous, $164 million before taxes divided among everybody in town puts more than $273,000 in 600 pockets.
Deal doubted that would happen. He said he wouldn't give it away if he won. But, he added, "with that kind of money, they could buy the place." Meaning the town of Portal.
But Harris, playing host to the world Saturday, didn't mention the purchase of the city as one of the items on his new shopping list.
And now for the runners-up:
In addition to the grand prize winner, 36 players matched all five numbers but not the Mega Ball number. They will receive second prizes of $250,000 each.
Another 207 players matched four numbers, plus the Mega Ball number — good for third prizes of $10,000 each.
Six California players matched five numbers, and another 38 matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. The prize amounts in California are different than what prize winners in the other Mega Ball participating states would receive.
The next drawing — worth $12 million — will be Tuesday.
The winning numbers from Friday night's drawing were: 7, 12, 13, 19 and 22. The Mega Ball number was 10.
