OT Neil quitting CSNY

A friend of mine half recalls a story about how Neil left CSNY, just leaving a note and disappearing halfway through a tour or something...

anyone know what my friend;s talking about?
thanks!

I believe your friend is thinking of the tour Neil did with Stephen Stills in 1976. He sent him a telegram saying "Funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach, Neil."

Ha...good thread...According to Chris O'Dell's book, Miss O'Dell...Stephen Stills and David Crosby we're extremely high maintenance and not easy to get along with.
Neil knew when it was time to Walk On.smoking smiley

Not that they would ever admit it, but I've always thought this was written about Neil ....

Neil works in mysterious ways...

Stills was drinking heavily at the time and Neil couldn't handle it.
Despite the fun with drugs, when it's time to work, Neil takes no
prisoners. You're either on or off that bus.

Now ... as far as that bit with wiping Crosby and Nash's vocals out
of the mix ...

Yeah, the Buffalo Springfield thing is a touchy subject. I think Furay
is disappointed but has a better viewpoint on it than he did back in '68.
I haven't read Einerson's book, but he accused Neil of bailing for his
solo career, which probably isn't entirely untrue. But the band wasn't
making it, so he had to have a Plan B. I guess as far as the reunion
goes, he had a Plan B too, but didn't bother to tell anyone!

Still, I don't think we should write it off completely.

Young left the Springfield at the worst time: right before a big TV show and right before Monterey, where they could have nailed it and probably made the film.
Instead they had do with Doug Hastings and David Crosby on guitar and sounded dire.
Then he came crawling back. Plus he was kinda bummed that his singles did nothing and Stills' For What It's Worth was a big chart success. However, they were just kids at the time, you gotta remember that. The book For What It's Worth is a good read.

David Geffen tried to negotiate a CSNY reunion...where Neil Young would get 50% of the revenue.

Well, if true, that is awfully telling, no? There's a decent explanation in Neil's fathers book "Neil and Me". Pretty much supports what's been said here but also mentions that Neil was having health problems of his own at the time which affected his decision to go the solo route.

I personally loved the CSN&Y group better than any of their solo efforts but they can't all be as professional as the Stones have been in staying together as a group. Neil tremendous sucess a a solo artist was probably the thing that cemented the split. If he had done as poorly as MJ's solo efforts who knows what the outcome would have been? peace

As much as CSNY blended perfectly well on a musical level, I think that Neil had too much talent to stay within any group for an extended period of time. The other three needed the other members to enhance their own sound and provide a certain amount of inspiration, whereas Neil excels the most when left to his own devices(just listen to Live at Massey Hall, one of the most impeccable live records ever released).I also always had a feeling that they harmonised better without him and that he was more or less just an additional ingredient to their already full-fledged act. He did provide a lot of spark guitar wise dueling with Stephen Stills but songwriting wise his cuts could have easily been on hos solo albums without losing much in the process ( I do adore the vocal harmonies on the studip cut of Helpless though)

Come on man, Neil Young and Crazy Horse mixed up some the best rock and roll
ever created and most of it is a lot better than the mellow harmonies of CSN.

Neil was grunge before grunge was called grunge... then he swooped in to claim
his king of grunge crown when the grungers were trying to act like they invented it.

Guess this is a good time to ask about the CSNY Live 74 box again, and Archives Vol 2.

Neil has often ran, or moved gears: it makes him Neil after all.

Didn't he say that it was better to head for the ditch, rather than the middle of the road. This was right after the success of Harvest

I agree. How Neil kept this in the can for so long is beyond me. Easily in my top 10 live albums of all time.

i've barely opened the box on Archives vol 1. Now i'm paranoid every thing is glued together. Still i got it relatively cheap, I can use it as a door stop.

I saw the Stills/Young show at Pine Knob in '76 from very close seats. Neither Neil or Stephen appeared to be feeling any pain. It was neither a pretty sight or sound. I found a boot from a few shows later near Boston and it confirmed my remembrances.
