OT - Eclectic Fuse (blog about Jazz-Rock)

Ok, this is TOTALLY OT! I'm sorry about this.

I'm a Stonesfan, but I also love to listen to other music.
I have a blog and it's particularly about Jazz-Rock/Fusion. And I'm talking about the period 1967 to 1979. Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock etc etc etc.

If you also have Tumblr, please 'follow' me.

Thanx for posting thisthumbs upthumbs up. I`m deep in the Stones since my teen-years, but there is some other stuff that knocked me out. Went through the Miles Davis stuff and especially his electric years gave me a new experience of listening to music.

Saw Chick Corea`s Return To Forever this year with Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Frank Gambale and Jean Luc Ponty. Fantastic! My personal concert of the year.

And of course I`ll try to make the front row again on the next Stones-Tour. cool smiley

Tom

* My personal favorites / review of albums
* Vintage photos of the artists
* Inspiring quotes
* Video / music files of that period

..even Chet Baker tried out som electric trumpetplaying around -74 but I can't say that it could beat his 50ies recordings...I guess Miles Herbie and Chick made the most impression from this short era (67-75)...I know it still excists as a musical form with former musicians from Miles groups like Stern and so on...
Personal favorites is 'On the corner' and 'Jack Johnson'...

Cool stuff. I saw RTF back in the day. One of the tightest bands I ever saw/heard.

Some personal faves:

Where Have I Known You Before - RTF
Crosswinds - Billy Cobham
Spectrum - Billy Cobham
Stanley Clarke album with Vulcan Prince
Believe It - Tony Williams

Jazz Fusion is a criminally underrated genre.

Here are some of my favourites:

1. Jeff Beck: Blow By Blow
2. Miles Davis: Jack Johnson Sessions
3. Mahavishnu Orchestra: Inner Mounting Flame
4. Keith Jarrett: Expectations
5. John McLaughlin & Carlos Santana: Love Devotion & Surrender
6. Santana: Caravanserai
7. Herbie Mann: Memphis Underground
8. Herbie Hancock: Headhunters
9: Weather Report: Live In Tokyo
10. Pat Metheny Group: Travels

I would also cite honourable mentions towards the Radiohead covers that Brad Mehldau performs, Tim Ries' Rolling Stones project, Mingus album by Joni Mitchell, Charlie Watts/Jim Keltner, Weird Nightmare (features both Keith Richards & Charlie Watts), and Willie Nelson's Night & Day which is a country/jazz Django Reinhardt fusion.

Forgot to mention two other faves:

1. David Axelrod: Songs of Experience
2. David Axelrod: Songs of Innocence

Please note this guy is not Obama's chief of staff, but rather an amazing jazz arranger/producer, possibly the flip side to Quincy Jones.

He arranged/produced Mercy Mercy Mercy for Cannonball Adderley, The Soul Of the Bible for Nat Adderley, Lou Rawls' 1960s capital recordings, David McAllum's The Edge, and The Electric Prunes Release of An Oath and Mass in D Minor.

I like the genre when it's not overdone. It is often over done. I saw Pat Metheny in Columbia MO , sat next to his Mom of the first row of the balcony. I waited the whole show for the guy to bend a note, I think he finally did...twice. Too many notes not enough space between em to catch my breath.

Weather Report was hot when Jaco wasn't too wasted. I will check out your list of favorites but when I start wanting note count I usually just slip on some Charlie Parker and let it go. Its about time we had another jazz/rock/bop star rise to the surface no? Thanks for the post DiamondDog7. peace.

Weather Report was also hot pre Jaco.

Live In Japan is very similar to Bitches Brew.

Jaco was good, but I find that Zawinul and Shorter were the driving forces behind Weather Report. At one stage, post Jaco, Zawinul fell out with Shorter, and Shorter's role in the band diminished.

I understand your point of view, Naturalust.

I'm a fan of the raw and loud stuff. Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis. But also RTF, Weather Report and many more. I've choosen the period from 1967 to 1979 because those were the days I love the genre. After that it became smooth and too boring. But there are exceptions of course.

Agreed.

Smooth is a quagmire of bilge; Bob James, Tom Scott, Grover Washington, George
Benson and Earl Klugh do not float my boat at all.

I like the Crusaders and Joe Sample: they have some seriously funky jazz chops, and have backed both Joe Cocker and BB King.

George Benson was good, pre Breezin, and his cover of White Rabbit is tasty. I don't like Another Side of Abbey Road, as McElmore Avenue by Booker T & The MGs is 100 % better.

Yeah I get it! There is obviously a fine line to that genre which is easy to cross and fall on the wrong side of the fence. It's that way with emo songs too, a bit too much something and it becomes cheesy as hell, just right amount and the heart strings of every chick in the house are hummin'! peace.

Naturalust,

You are correct from what you say. Smooth jazz is for women, as they feel it is jazz without a cerebral context.

It would be impossible to seduce a woman if you had Dark Magus by Miles Davis on the cd player, or Ornette Coleman/Pat Metheny's Song X. However, stick on a little Al Jarreau and they melt.

This worked for me.

Don't forget Ollie Halsall and Allan Holdsworth, who get ignored quite a bit.

Ollie Halsall and Allan Holdsworth were pioneering the legato sax like Fusion on guitar in the early 1970s which fed into Eddie Van Halen.

Bands like Patto and Tempest.
