OT: Ringo turns 70 (with peace and love)

Better to think of him as forever frozen in time as the 23-year-old star of A Hard Day's Night, rather than the cantankerous old cuss he has become.

Possibly the luckiest man of the 20th Century: hooked up with the Beatles, by all accounts happily married to a Bond girl.

While he may be the luckiest man in the world for hooking up with the other Beatles,
there's no doubt his drumming was an integral part of the Beatles style and sound.
Even good old Charlie Watts is a dear friend of Ringo, and has high respect for his drumming!
Plus, he had several great solo hits with a little help from his friends...

Happy B-day Ringo.

Happy Birthday to Ringo!

I wish both he and Paul many, many more years of life and good health.

But.

I kind of hope that someday Ringo is the last surviving Beatle. Still hanging on, at 100+, the Yoda of the group...showing up on talk shows, being showered with acclaim, and still very, very funny.

A rock n'roll George Burns.

whoa fantastic!! saw ringo live with george at bengla desh concert at msg. what a treat. what a fantastic guy too. i've met him several times. really sweet despite whatever he has to do to stay sane as a survivor after all these many years and all these many deaths so close to him. a wonderful drummer. the beatles were lucky to get him. they were the sum of their parts, not one really outstanding kinda 'session' quality player amongst them; possible exception of mccartney's wonderfully pwrful and creative bass lines and moves....
he is sooo underestimated. he will be mocked here too. i know...but he's great.
his signature "awkward" "lefty" fills STILL dominate almost all of pop rock and country music...his 'style' his emotions his taste; his simplicity his accents and puncuations...his hand percussion on the hard days night kinda acoustic rockin' beatles days....just jubilant. ringo is great. i love ringo. he's no charlie as to precision and the special amazing unique thing charlie does with jazz and rolls and toms and stuff. but ringo has his own way through it. lots of cymbals LOTS...giving amazing energy to all the beatle tracks...lots of furious tom work; subtle and profound. he'll always get slagged but he'll always be ringo. and he will always have a discography others would die for.

There was a clip used in 25x5 with keith talking about brian's death, saying something like "some people you know will never make 70".

Wasn't taking about Mr. Starkey?
I've also imagined him as the last surviving Beatle.

Too bad John can't be the last surviving Beatle. He'd be such an interesting old man now. Like the elderly Groucho Marx.

the afternoon show. there were rumors about who would be appearing but really we didn't know for sure. the dylan set was absolutely breath-taking. the excitement in that place when he, of all people, shows up in the midst of george and ringo and all those great rhythm players, all of badfinger on acoustic guitars, eric givin' it the big waah waah; george in totally great voice. cool as a cucumber.
the jubliation of a new york crowd catching dylan at this point in his career accompanied by leon and george like that...well everyone's seen the movie. but live, we didn't know what was gonna happen or who was gonna show. short one of the other beatles, which we were all praying for, it was like the miracle show of all time. i literally felt blessed. i glowed for days. i still feel it. that first harrison solo album friggin' KILLED. this band blew me right out of the room; right out of the room...come july 72 i'd return to see the rolling stones indoors for the first time. between those two shows...i dunno...it's like shown me the very toppermost of what good hearted lovely gifted people can do together, for others and for themselves. ringo on the second kit was a total gift; u can feel his big heart u really can. the guitar barrage was astoundingly thick and warm and powerful. i don't need no waaah waaahhhss....the pope owns fifty one percent of general motors and the stock exchange is the only thing he's qualified to quote us...george... and
