Bowie was terrific before he became a cokehead and stopped getting any sleep.

This is meant historically speaking...not as a putdown.

He was terrific afterwards as well... who else sings about Kether and Malkuth?

Anyone else notice the "Love Me Do" harmonica lick towards the end?

This is great ...... I loved this song ... actually I blew up my friend speakers playing this song on a party back then ...but I think it was his own fault connecting his 100 watt Quad amplifier on 40 watt speakers confused smiley

Yes - that was a common feature when they played the song live around then.

At the final Spiders show at Hammersmith on 3rd July, they played a lengthy medley of Jean Genie/Love me Do near the end with Jeff Beck guesting on guitar and Bowie singing a bit more of 'Love me do', although it wasnt included on the official release which came out ten years later.

Thanks for the footage. Bowie was a better second-rate Jagger than I remembered.
The Spiders were exactly as third-rate a band.

Third rate band?

To die for:

God that solo still gives me shivers, when he's let it loose and it's wailing and then he reins it back it with that awesome Les Paul sound he had.

Mick Ronson was a guitar god.

He was totally into the early Beatles at this point. In 1972 he often played This Boy in concert.

More from the third rate band.

Proto punk.

This riff is in many a Sex Pistols track.

Ronno is great on this but I love Trevor Bolders bass.

Yeah, third-rate band my eye. Thanks for the link, that clip is, not surprisingly, great.I love vintage David and the Spiders and Ronno is indeed sorely missed.

The BBC didn't film NME 1968 it was Southern and the footage is archived. There's a forum thats gone over this before.

Still missing: Stones on Juke Box Jury and 107 Doctor Who.

Great clip. They sounded amazing live (on TV!) and the production is top with cameras moving around the musicians, close-ups, spychedelic effects and some weird lens used on the cameras. I like that the drum kit is upfront but I don't know why!
Rock and roll,
Mops
