Remember that in his book Chet Flippo revealed that around 1978-79 Jagger wanted to play in China badly.
Thus CF was hired to write a propaganda piece that showed the band as true men of the labour class. >grinning smiley<

indeed - and then for no clear reason at the meeting with the Chinese officials
the Mick seemed to go out of his way to behave in deliberately unacceptable ways -
something he's always been extraordinarily gifted at, so the scenario must have been ... special :E

Must say that the skirt the lady on the tour-poster is wearing, does nog exactly fit in the
tradition of the Chinese propaganda posters. I can't see the streets of Beijing anno 1978 filled
with posters like this.
(still, the tour poster from Europe 73 would be a worse choice to convince the Chinese authorities)

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Yeah, dcba,I remember you wrote interesting stuff about it on a thread of mine about Bill Carter one year ago .

Mick Jagger to Chet Flippo (April 1979):
"The Stones want to play in China. We'll never get Russia. But the Chinese Government is interested. They don't really know who the Stones are. What we need is a concise, detailed history and description of the band to present to the Chinese Government. Something that explains to China why China NEEDS us... Just haul out the good stuff about us. Quote the right lyrics. Explain why we are what we are."

Mick Jagger meets the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Chai Zemin. Accompanying him are Congressman Bill Alexander (second from left) and Bill Carter (left)

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

When the interviewer on the DVD asked Mick about the poster, Mick should have condescendingly rolled his eyes, looked at his watch, and said "It's really, really obvious. Next question!" Why didn't Mick do that? Why?! Ooooh, Mick!!
