what is hard to understand is why when jagger does waitsian things with his
voice, to break the monotony of one voice or to take on characters like
tom does, jagger gets trashed instead of praised.

cos waits sounds authentic; jagger sounds phony.

both sound quite contrived, but not in a bad way. you do what you can with
the instrument you got. jagger wrecked his instrument a bit by overstressing it
during the peak years (for which he was much praised, since nothing fans
love more than an artist sacrificing themself) and so has had to find
other ways. sometimes he coasts, which is awful on record but smart on
the road, but sometimes, like on "laugh i nearly died" or SH's "one day
one night" or will.i.am's "hard", he leaves even the great tom waits in the dust.

laugh, i nearly died is unlistenable to these ears because of jagger's annoyingly mannered vocals.
