Binaural Microphones

Does any one have experience with these mics for recording concerts, they look to be small enough to hide but I believe you need a battery pack to run them. I am lead to believe that these mics with a minidisk is the best way to bootleg a concert, is this a common method or is there a better and easier way.

Minidiscs are lossy and outdated (and Sony bullsh*t). Today you can record lossless on flash memory (like USB sticks).

Listen to this binaural recording with headphones on. It's not a concert, but you'll be amazed if you haven't heard it before. Don't forget the headphones:

I'd rather use a minidisc with decent preamp and D/A converter than a lossless flash equipment with crap preamp and D/A converter. The whole chain is important, not just the resulting format.

There used to be a "how to bootleg our concerts" guide on the Black Crowes website where they discussed the microphone issue.

"Binaural"recording isn't really appropriate terminology here.
True Binaural recording was a form of stereo recording which used microphones on either side of a dummy head [a bit like mine ;^) ] to capture the truest stereo image of a natural acoustic sound stage.
It could certainly capture the sound in the hall very naturally...but that probably wouldn't be a good thing !

I recall Lou Reed's "Street Hassle" and the live "Take No Prisoners" were recorded in binaural and Lou spent a good portion of promotional interviews discussing the technology, much to the chagrin of the interviewers, You had to listen to the LPs with headphones to achieve the benefit, which to me was notable, but left a regular listening with a somewhat muddy mix.

It has validity if you're recording live music with a natural soundstage but is of little relevance with anything subsequently overdubbed or mixed.
