News Of The World - paper that got The Stones busted - to close
Posted by: Silver Dagger ()
Date: July 7, 2011 18:46

Sensational news in the UK. A few minutes ago it was announced that the controversial tabloid paper the News Of The World - owned by Rupert Murdoch, owner of Sky News, will be closing after this Sunday.

This comes after allegations of phone hacking - first into stars mobiles and now more sickly into the phones of murder victims and dead soldiers.

The paper is the biggest selling single edition in the UK and is very powerful, as Mick n Keith found to their detriment in 67.

More soon.

The phone hacking thing is probably just the tip of a very dubious iceberg.

Good riddance to a lousy newspaper.

You see what happens when ya mess with the Stones? (I thought I would beat colonial to the punch.) That aside, I wish this meant an end to the sort of "journalism' that the NOTW was infamous for. Regrettably it won't. Not as long as their a demand for such cal...

Damn right. I wonder what other allegations were about to come out. Maybe they walked before they were made to run.

Smart move by Murdoch to save his head.

Sure, the bad apples and weasels deserve a lot worse than being fired, but a whole bunch of people like admin assistants, printers, distributors, the guy who sweeps the floor at night, etc. etc. who had nothing to do with these scandals will now be out of work.

Murdoch. What a guy.

We'll probably get "The Sun on Sunday" or something similar within a fortnight.

"Please be assured that, as Editor, I will do everything in my power to restore the News of the World's reputation for fair, accurate and, most importantly, responsible journalism."

he forgot to add LOL at the end.

Where can I find this announcement? Their own website doesn't mention anything about closing down (at the time of writing).

As somebody posted we will just have the Sun On Sunday within a few months. Given that the Sun is the biggest selling paper in the UK it means that the Sun brand will be extended to Sunday and probably sell more copies than the News of The World did.

So Murdoch looks like he is taking firm action but he wins because he will end up selling more papers.

Having said all that - good riddance to the NOW.

Now if they's only shut down Murdoch'd other cesspool - Fox "News".

Can't believe this purveyor of muck and fear now owns the venerable Wall Street Journal.

Latest news is that former editor Andy Coulsen, an ex-Sun showbiz hack who had a meteoric rise to the top, is to be arrested because he allegedly knew phones were being tapped while he was at the helm of the paper.
Coulsen went on to head the Conservative Party's communications team.

Yes, indeed. There are allegations that police were paid off for passing on highly confidential information to the News of the World reporters to give the paper a reporting advantage on top stories, particularly murder cases. I'm sure it goes on at papers round the world but the NotW were particularly ruthless.

More here.

Interesting one that. There's a paper in Newcastle called the Sunday Sun. I'm sure their lawyers are in conference right now.

They can't possibly hire the same reporters. The public won't buy that and more importantly the advertisers won't. It was major advertisers that pulled their business away that led to the paper closing down. You can't recover from bad press like that.
