Madrid (CNN) -- Seven people were killed Wednesday when an earthquake struck southeastern Spain, the central government's chief representative in the region told National Spanish Radio.

The 5.3-magnitude quake occurred at 4:47 p.m. (10:47 a.m. ET) and was centered about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of Murcia, near the Mediterranean coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said. That is about 350 kilometers (218 miles) south-southeast of Madrid.

It was preceded at 3:05 p.m. by a 4.5-magnitude temblor centered in the same area, the survey said.

At least one of the deaths occurred in a building collapse in the town of Lorca, state-run EFE said.

CNN's Juan Munoz contributed to this story.

Sad to hear. Murcia region is a great area, and great people there (crazy to party but that is another story...). I used to live there 9 months. During my stay (1994) it was the warmest summer for hundred yaers, and there were quite bad forest fires. Lorca - where the earthquake now hit hard - is a nice town. The last time I visited Lorca was on my way from Murcia to El Ejido to see The Rolling Stones!

I hope all the best everyone involved.

Spain must not be used to earthquakes. 5.3 isn't really that big. But best wishes to everybody there.

So far, they are saying the epicenter was rather shallow, accounting for more than expected damage.

I was walking around the centre of Lorca less than a fortnight ago.First time I been there and only 1 hours drive from where I was staying. The earthquake could not have hit a more central area judging from the pictures. Most of the high rise buildings are in that area. All looks so familiar to me when I look at the TV footage.Only been there once, but not long ago.Good luck to all the people living there. sad smileythumbs upsad smiley
