Semi OT Saw Jerry Lee Lewis Thursday Night

In a Casino near Seattle. He was in fine voice and played piano real well. A nice mix of hits and non (you win again was a highlight). Nice backup band. Would go again but brothers the age of the crowd (oxygen, scooters, canes) would give pause to the most battle hardened stones fan. We ain't getting any younger.

Gee it sounds like he might have actually put forth effort AND been sober!

If that was the case congratulations Shott - you got lucky with that show!

He's been pretty much sober since 1981 (when he had major stomach surgery), & has been almost completely teetotal for at least 20 years! The drunken Jerry Lee Lewis cliche is about as out-of-date as the junkie Keith Richards cliche...

Very heartening to read that he's in good form. When he played the Grammys (I think) with Little Richard a couple of years ago he looked and sounded like he'd just been embalmed. It was pretty unsettling. Seeing him make a cameo at a Springsteen gig in Dublin in '93 was one of my favourite concert moments ever.

I saw him only once at the original Olympia the day after the Stones show in 95 (some kind of revenge because I could not attend the Stones show). A short but wonderful show - haven't touched a piano since ;-)

I would bet that since quitting alcohol in the late 90s/early 00s (not 1981 according to his daughter!) he has been on some heavy nerve medication and other stuff to deal with the ravages of it.

That accounts for the deer in headlights look and the slurred speech.

I've had a couple of family members who basically had the same issue. They drank heavily until they were older and when they quit they basically aged dramatically very quickly and the meds created the zombie effect.

He may have quit alcohol altogether in the late 90s / early 00s, but I can assure you he very rarely drank after 1981 (instead he got more & more into harder drugs throughout the 80s & to a lesser extent the 90s)...& you're right, he's on all sorts of medication.
