At 1:20-1:22, he does that upstroke on the cymbal. He did that on SNL back in 1978 and I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Is that a jazz drummer's move?

That upstroke is extremely cool and those small details really are an expression of his huge knowledgde about jazz drumming. He made an upstroke in Finland 2003, during the end of YCAGWYW, but he missed the cymbal because it was swinging from one side to the other since his last stroke. That is, if possible, even cooler.
