American Cities/States 29..England 1 in Stones Songs
Posted by: colonial ()
Date: March 22, 2011 04:19

Im quite surprised that out of all The Stones songs 29 American Cities/States got mentioned in them compared to 1 English City..London which is in three songs..plus something like only 1/2 a dozen of their videos were filmed in the UK.Most of the 29 American Cities/States are in more than one song.

That's because English girls are so prissy. I can't stand'em on the telephone!

that's a lot of work colonial. Near obsessive. One could count Play With Fire in that it mentions a certain neighbourhood (don't know if Brits use that term) in London -- St. John's Wood. There is a tube stop there and I took a foto of the sign whilst in London for the O2 shows.

Also, colonial, why don't you list all the songs and their city references for both the American cities and England. You've already done a lot of work, what's a wee bit more?

How about all the cities named in Route 66: Chicago to LA. St. Louis, Joplin Missouri, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Gallup New Mexico, Flagstaff Arizona, Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino. 13 cities and 3 states in just 1 song!

Actually only 12 cities mentioned, but add California to states so 12 cities and 4 states.

I guess nothing can beat "I've been everywhere" - made famous by Johnny Cash:

I was totin' my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"

[Chorus:]
I've been everywhere, man.
I've been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert's bare, man.
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.
I've been everywhere.

I've been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla, I'm a killer.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa,
Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika,
Schefferville, Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica,
Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield, Shreveport,
Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond du Lac, Davenport,
Idaho, Jellico, Argentina, Diamantina,
Pasadena, Catalina, see what I mean-a.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelbourg, Colorado,
Ellensburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, Eldorado,
Larimore, Admore, Haverstraw, Chatanika,
Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika,
Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City,
Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity.

DGA35..Route 66 is not a Stones song it was written by Bobby Troup in 1946

Three place names mentioned in 'Play With Fire' - the two above plus St Johns Wood.

They're not towns or cities though - just districts of London. As is Chelsea, which gets a namecheck in 'You Cant Always Get What You Want'.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other city in the UK other than London which gets mentioned in a song written by the Stones.

Then again, as they hardly seem to PLAY anywhere in the UK other than London, that's not much of a surprise. I don't think they travel north of the M25 too often.
