(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

It was their first truly big hit and IMO, their most well-known globally - surely?

If you had to name ONE song that describes what the Stones are all about - the blues, the guitars, the harmonies, the rhythm - just ONE to describe just what is so goddamn special about the Stones, what would it be? Say the person you were describing the group to awoke from a 48-year coma, or was someone born deaf who just had his hearing restored, or somehow for some reason never heard a Rolling Stones song. Which ONE would you play him (or her)? Not necessarily, your favorite song (that's too easy), but the one that sums them up best in all their ragged glory.

In that case, Satisfaction. That's the one that really made the Stones popular here in the US.

Which, by the way, is not my personal favorite (that would be JJF).

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.

I think we are the wrong people to decide. I think the general public would pick a 60s tune............Get off of my Cloud maybe ? ;

Loud guitars ,Thumping Drums and loutish vocals . THAT is the Stones to a lot of people.

That's masochistic. We're the right people and don't care about the 'general public'.

It's clear to me that no real aficionados have weighed in on this one because the obvious choice would be "Sympathy For The Devil".

Quintessential is not to be confused with best, most loved, greatest or anything like that.

I think Brown Sugar is as quintessential as it gets.

All down the line is a good example too!

Agree 100%.

JJF. The only song I've never been bored with, at any point in my life.

Brown Sugar

Brown Sugar (the version on Sticky Fingers) misses something in the melodic section. The quintessential Stones song has to have a balance between rhythm/riffs and melody. So a live version from one of the 70, 71, 72 and 73 Tours would do.

There are many tracks I could list from the 60's and 70's
but i want to choose "Fancy Man Blues" .
This b-side show the STONES at their best IMO.
Why, because after all these years of playin' rock'n'roll , rhythm and blues & blues, they show us a stunin' demonstration of their absolute mastery in playin' these kind of tracks.

Great choice. Nothing flashy at all--just an incredible slow-burn intensity. The work of men who have the music in their bones.

I wasn't trying to be pretentious, Tod. I just wanted to avoid yet another "favorite song" thread and take a little different approach that would hopefully be thought-provoking...But yeah, it's a great word.

Majesty, what are Mick's, Charlie's and Bill's thoughts? I can almost hear Charlie think. He looks a bit ...hmmm ... sceptical.

Of course! But Mick looks as if he's got a vague idea.
