Is Charlie Watts the heart of the stones?
Posted by: rollmops ()

Probably some are going to think it's a stupid question but I ask it anyway. Charlie's status among the rolling stones fans is quite unique:nobody seems to dislike him. Plenty of Mick, Keith,Brian, Bill, MickT and Ron haters but Charlie is alright. Why do we love him so much?
Rock and Roll,
Mops

Because he doesn't talk to much..................and in music it's important to keep your mouth shut and play (or sing)

Yes that is true Nicos. But when he speaks he sometimes says negative things about being in the rolling stones and yet nobody seems to mind. His lack of enthusiasm about going on tour or doing promotion isn't taken against him. I love the way Charlie plays the drums and I dig his eccentricity; he is so much not rock and roll!
Rock and roll,

It is exaggarated to call CW the heart of the Stones, but his playing, which is simple but effective, is an important element of the band's unique groove. CW is respected because he is a man with a lot of style, he seems to be an independent gentleman who has done a great job for decades, without being a slave to any kind of trend.

not a stupid question at all. it goes to the essence. heartbeat, rhythm, feel, swing, its all there with Charlie. and supportive playing, teamwork, creative ideas for stage design...plus he's no prima donna...knew when someone else's ( Jimmy Miller) playing was right for the song..

Yes, and Brian was the soul of the group.

We love Charlie because he just is who he is. No grand standing, no apologies, no image making - he's just Charlie.

And those drums of his are the heartbeat of the Stones.

chill out...that was me. I was going to call him the *ss, but I thought that woudl be offensive. I was referring to his creativity in the studio on slide, harp and all the more eccentric instruments he used.

When he plays he's the heartbeat, without a doubt. With an average drummer the Stones would have never gone that far...

I think it's over-romantic to call Charlie the Heart of the band.
Keith likes to tell that old tale of Charlie being the most important member. It's just romantism.

Everyone knows who's the heart of the band...

Charlie has been the steady man of the band since the beginning. Not a lot else. He is an employee -and a good one.
