I'm sure ANY 67-year-old artist would be THRILLED to have you tell them they did their best work when they were 22, and that they've spent the rest of their lives consistently failing to live up to your expectations.

Well, they might not be as great as they used to be, but they're still way better than the competition.

The great Rolling Stones years are over, there's no if about it. A more pertinent question today however would surely be 'what's their next move', and there doesn't exactly appear to be any kind of answer forthcoming at the present time. And in fact, 'will there even be a next move at all' ? As time slips by, one is given to wonder ........

I first asked that question in the mid-80s and every year that has passed since then has re-confirmed my belief that they have. Very few people have had a longer run of greatness than the Stones. I can think of only Dylan and Neil Young in the rock world and Miles Davis in jazz.

In terms of success, that depends. Obviously as a company their great years are not over, unless they never tour again, which is looking more and more likely. Then the whole thing is over.

Right, whereas the rest of us say they did their best work when they were 25-28 and have only spent the last 40 or so years failing to live up to our expectations.

I count Some Girls as being among their best work, and they were in their mid-thirties then. Anyway, even if it were true, no one likes being told they did their best stuff when they were a kid, and that they've done nothing their entire adult life except coast along.
