Gimme Shelter Featured In Violent Video Game Ad

This song was never about the glorification of war, to me anyway, it had always represented a point of view that was quite the opposite. Well, now they've gone and ruined Gimme Shelter. I usually don't care how artists decide to license their songs. Everyone deserves to make money off their own stuff. But I take issue with this greatest of songs being used to sell a violent video game. I really do. What rubbish this ad is.

Ay yi yi....ok here's one thing I won't defend: stupid puerile violent empty focking video games.

Jeez Rolling Stones what the fack were you thinking licensing this?

"It's just a shot away" wasn't intended as an exciting promise...

Exactly, "It's Just A Shot Away" is now all about having fun, while playing a video game about killing people in virtual war scenes. What total bullshit.

I don't care how much money the Stones want to make. I would generally say more power to them. But they didn't have to license this song for this purpose.

But is this one of theirs, or is it part of the pre-1970 catalog that belongs to ABKCO? If it's one of ABKCO's, they have no say in it.

Oh, interesting. Did the Stones license this or was it ABKO?

All I'm saying is I hope it was ABKO who licensed the song and not the Stones. Someone on this site must know the definitive answer to that. Do the Stones own the rights to Gimme Shelter?

Your right JJFlash2010, I was thinking the same when watching the clip.

It is ABKCO, they own everything pre 1971 as well as Brown Sugar and Wild Horses I believe. My CD of Let It Bleed is ABKCO so they must own Gimme Shelter.
S'pose it's not that bad cause this could be the only time that some of the kids who play this suit have heard the Stones and I have certainly bought songs after hearing them in ads, so others may do as well.

Keith supported Blair with regards to the war in Irak right ?

This is a brilliant move for the Stones, opens up their music for a whole new generation.

You can be puritanical about this or you can be a realist.

I say get real. The Stones back catalogue is there to be exploited like anyone elses.

...he told Blair in writing that, in view of the situation & how it had developed by then, the PM had no alternative but to 'stick to his guns'.

I guess it all depends on how you WANNA read such a thing - and/or: what you wanna prove with it... - but imo that's a bit different than supporting the war in Irak.

It is ABKCO

that bears repeating - it's ABKCO that licenses out pre-Exile stuff

1st, I agree with Baxter...

Personally I'm loving the fact that Gimme Shelter is on this commercial as I get to hear a bit of the song every time that stupid commercial is on. Normally I mute the commercials, I listen to that one.

Now if I could just get them to license the entire catalog, I might start looking at commercials as music videos as opposed to the annoying breaks in my shows that they are. Imagine all of the fun we could have with Cialis, Viagra & Extendz commercials if they were playing, "Star Star", "Start Me Up", etc. I know I'd find all those feminine hygiene commercials a lot more entertaining if "Mother's Little Helper" was playing in the background. Dating sites & services could use "Spider & The Fly" to their hearts content. We could have chat/dating lines playing "She Was Hot" & "Honky Tonk Women". Car commercials with "Brand New Car". At this rate, we could watch TV just for the Stones music in commercials!

Peace,
Mr DJA

The initial problem that "JJFlash2010" mentioned is the fact that it is an anti war song.

I personally love it when they use Stones song for what ever

>>Well, now they've gone and ruined Gimme Shelter.<<

ruined Gimme Shelter? that's quite impossible, imo.
it's fine and pc to be against war and (to an extent) to such video games but Stones music has been used even as soundtracks to many movies about war. mostly Vietnam related.
Satisfaction, Paint it Black, Gimme Shelter...

I'm more offended when a perectly good song is used as the intro of a sleazy daily cook show.

If you want. But he even said that he would happily go there himself. Moreover, if you are genuinely "antiwar" (stupid term because everyone is "antiwar, except if"), you dont drop a line to a prime minister saying "carry on".

So please all stop acting outraged for a mere videogame...

Face it...Gimme Shelter is a very ominous sounding tune. The lyrics could be about Winnie the Pooh and his pals (about as innocent as it gets in my book) and it would still be sought out for licensing deals that involve violent themes.

I've seen the ad and think it is a great use of the song (though I won't be buying or playing the game).

Right,I'm not a gamer. But the commercial is played heavily. Pretty well done whether you agree with it or not. Pretty slickly produced and it's easy to get caught up in it. I find myself singing along with it even though I have no intention of buying the game.

Are you guys serious?? You are OFFENDED at this commercial? This video is HILARIOUS! Normal people getting to experience this kind of thrill. Its a brilliant commercial. For many of us videogames are a pasttime. I can't believe that fellow Stones fans would be such wimps.

Seriously... lighten up.

using songs to promote products is lame in general. in this case, the song was used in the proper context.
if it were a commercial for a roofing company then i'd have an issue with it. or if an anti-onion group used "fool to cry" to promote their cause.

i suppose the people that are offended by violent video games are also of the mindset that the columbine shootings was all thanks to marilyn manson?

I'm sure Mick and Keith had no say in the matter but they'll enjoy the royalty cheques! Does anyone recall back in the 90's when ABKCO gave permission to use Satisfaction for a Snickers chocolate bar commercial?
