First Jagger/Richards Song?

Keith seems to indicate in his book that the song he and Mick were working on the famous time when they were "locked in the kitchen" by Andrew was "As Tears Go By", but I thought that came much later. I seem to remember hearing a Mersey-sounding monstrosity called "It Should Be You", and that that was the first actual song they wrote. Anybody?

The Ztengraf site shows a lot of early songs written for another artists:

"What Kind Of Girl"
"It Should Be You"
"Leave Me Alone"
"Shang A Doo Lang"
"So Much In Love"
"Will You Be My Lover Tonight"
"Give Me Your Hand"
"I Want You To Know"
"When A Girl Loves A Boy"
"You Must Be The One"

I suppose any of these ones could be the first.

The BBC broadcast "The Rolling Stones Story", a six part documentary, in 1973.
This is an excerpt from episode 2:

You should be able to listen to this by just clicking the link.

The whole series is still available in FLAC here:

and in MP3 (courtesy of Zagalo) here:

Yes, that's exactly what I remember "It Should be You" from, the BBC documentary. Used to have it on cassette years ago.

He also says that the first song they felt they could bring to the Stones was "The Last Time".

What about "Little By Little"?

Wasn't that first?

I've posted this video elsewhere, but it's relevant to this thread, too.

This must surely be one of the very first released Jagger/Richards compositions - it was certainly released before Tell Me (You're Coming Back)

If it was "As Tears Go By" it should have been "As Time Goes By" but never believed it was their first ......it's most likely "It Should Be You" or one of the stones78 posted

There's no way it was 'As Tears Go By'.

The dates dont add up for starters - the song was originally cut under the title 'As Time Goes By' in March '64 - Marianne's version under the new title was recorded after that and released in July. Keith suggests they wrote it and gave it to Marianne pretty much straight away, which would probably date that to sometime around spring '64.

'Tell Me' had been recorded for their first album a few weeks beforehand. 'Little by Little' (credited to Phelge/Spector) was recorded even earlier - 4th Feb. 1964.

The first Jagger/Richards compositions were probably the ones they gave to other artists - George Bean's It Should be You/Will You Be My Lover Tonight had both sides written by Jagger-Richards, and that single came out in early jan. 1964, so was probably recorded some time in late 1963. Gene Pitney's "That Girl Belongs To Yesterday' also came out Jan'64.

Nico Zentgraf's site lists the following demo sessions from late 1963, which feature the first few J/R compositions :

20th November: London, Regent Sound Studios. Producer Andrew Oldham.
Sound engineer: Bill Farley.
- My Only Girl (MJ/KR) - STU on piano; early version of 'That Girl Belongs
To Yesterday'; demo for George Bean, later given to Gene Pitney

631120C 20th - 21st November: London, Regent Sound Studios. Producer: Andrew
Oldham. Sound engineer: Bill Farley.
- It Should Be You I (MJ/KR) -demo for George Bean
- It Should Be You II (MJ/KR) -Rolling Stones-version
- Leave Me Alone (MJ/KR) -STU on piano; demo for Doug Gibbons
- Shang A Doo Lang (MJ/KR) -demo for Adrienne Poster
- So Much In Love (MJ/KR) -demo for The Mighty Avengers (21.11.)
- Sure I Do (BJ) -unverified
- Will You By My Lover Tonight (MJ/KR) -demo for George Bean; unverified
- With A Song In My Heart ( ) -unconfirmed
Note: Many other tracks (mostly for the Andrew Oldham Orchestra) have
been recorded in these seesions, one or more Stones might have
been involved, but there are no clues.

7th or 9th December: London, Regent Sound Studios. Producer: Andrew
Oldham. Sound engineer: Bill Farley. Demo-session.
- Give Me Your Hand (MJ/KR) -Stones-demo for Teddy Green
- I Want You To Know I (MJ/KR and/or BJ) -BJ on lead vocals (and harmonica);
unverified
- I Want You To Know II (MJ/KR and/or BJ) -BJ on lead vocals (and harmonica);
faster than version I; unverified
- When A Girl Loves A Boy I (MJ/KR)
- When A Girl Loves A Boy II (MJ/KR) -longer version with chorus intro; unverified
- You Must Be The One (MJ/KR) -demo for The Greenbeats
Line-up: MJ (voc)/KR (gtr)/BJ (gtr)/Reg Guest (p)/Erik Ford (bass)/Andy
White (dr)
Note: Give Me Your Hand is commonly known as I’ll Hold Your Hand among
Stonesfans and was first intended for The Beatles (!).

I didn't mean to suggest the first song was "As Tears Go By" - I know it wasn't. Keith talks about being locked in the kitchen (he means it literally, pissing in the sink, etc., but that's another story) and in the same breath talks about ATGB, thereby leaving the impression that was the first song. Don't know if it was intentional.

well, it's just a Jimmy Reed song with somewhat new lyrics.

I should look back and see if Bill says anything about this in "Stone Alone"

Re: "locked in the kitchen":

In his book “Stoned”, Andrew Oldham states that he locked Mick and Keith in a flat (probably 33, Mapesbury Road, Brent which they all shared) and left them trying to write some material while he went to have a meal with his mother telling them that he expected a song when he returned if they wanted any food.
He goes on to say that when he returned, he quietly opened the front door, crept upstairs and listened in through the locked door and, having satisfied himself that something was going on, he crept back downstairs and this time slammed the front door closed and went back upstairs, unlocked the door and asked them what they had come up with.
Jagger, who by this time was tired and hungry, is quoted as saying that they’d “written this @#$%& song and you’d better @#$%& like it”!

This is a list (I think complete) of the songs that were "given away" upto the beginning of 1965:

Will You Be My Lover Tonight – George Bean (Decca F11808, January 1964) Producer: Andrew Oldham.
It Should Be You – George Bean (‘b’ side to above)

That Girl Belongs To Yesterday – Gene Pitney (United Artists UP 1045, February 1964) Producer: Andrew Oldham.

Shang A Doo Lang – Adrienne Poster (Decca F11864, March 1964) Producer: Andrew Oldham.

Give Me Your Hand – Teddy Green (Piccadilly 7N35173, March 1964)

As Tears Go By – Marianne Faithful (Decca F11923, August 1964) Producer: Andrew Oldham.

So Much In Love – The Mighty Avengers (Decca F11962, August 1964) Producer: Andrew Oldham.

You Must Be The One – The Greenbeats (Pye 7N15718, November 1964) Producer: John Paul Jones.

Blue Turns To Grey – Tracey Day (Amy 917, 1964 US) Producer: Bob Gaudio

All I Want Is My Baby – Bobby Jameson (Decca F12032, January 1965 Producer: Andrew Oldham.
Each And Every Day – Bobby Jameson (‘b’ side to above)

I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys – The Toggery Five (Parlophone 5249, February 1965) Producer: Andrew Oldham
