I am thinking of purchasing the Martin D-41 GJ (George Jones model. Anyone ever play one of these? Thoughts?

The other opion is purchasing a new Martin D-42. The seller of the D-41 says I am crazy to not only buy a new Martin..but to even think about it. He mentions the scalloped bracing on GJ model as one of the benefits over the D-0-42. His last email stated would you rather own one of a hunder guitars made (D-41 GJ) ..or one of 100,000 (D-42)?


Any thoughts...?

I can't say something about the D-41 or the D-42, as I never played on one of these. But I love Martin guitars in general. I am playing a D-28 most of the time. Sounds just fabulous and is smooth to play.
For me as a lefthanded player, it's also great to get guitars at the same price, as the righthanded models. Not a lot of companies are doing this.

Would I rather get a guitar one of a 100 or 100,000 made? Well, I would get the one which sounds better to me. Same with the price or the look. When I was a kid, I went to the Martin distributor in Germany with my dad. I tried between 20 and 30 different guitars. In the end he fell in love with one of the cheaper models.

unfortunately, I may not be able to play them before purchasing one ...so was hoping for comparision notes.

The sound is fantastic, the item does not look as pretty, just a normal guitar but the sound is beautiful.

I think John1982 makes a good point. Just because the George Jones is one of a hundred doesn't automatically mean it's any better than a more mass produced model. The seller is just using that as a marketing ploy to get you to buy it.

And you never know, there could be some odd thing about the George Jones' that makes them not so good, despite the seller's claims. You need to research that model, maybe call a Martin dealer, or a few of them, and ask them what they think about the George Jones model. Look on Harmony Central.com's user reviews too. That is an excellent place to find out if any instrument has an unusual quirk or flaw that makes it not worth buying.

Great site and lots of knowledge. Incidentally I own a regular D-41. Great guitar. So is the D-42.

I just acquired a DM....the low rent US guitar. I traded my Epi Casino for it.I know we aren;t talking apples to apples with what you are looking at but....

It has really good sound for a low end Martin. It hhas that wonderful Martin smell, a tight bass and good treble. It is a no frills guitar and not solid wood on the sides or back. For the money, you might be able to do better withh a Yamaha,Art & Lutherie, or even a Canadian Gibson.

But then again, there is something about a Martin. As compared to the high end Martin's, there is no comparison. I was going to get one of the new D15s. They are incredible! If you are looking to spend 2K US, try it. I also played the baritone Taylor which was like a religious experience. Because of that guitar, I have decided to upgrade my Squier Tele vs. buying a Fender Tele so I can save up.
