If your are referring to the "Rock 'n' Roll = Just fun" thing, that "died" a little when Bob Dylan plugged his Fender in 1965...and I think some good music came from that...

Plus the "hair" bands are not relevant at all in rock history...The 80's truly good bands all have their place, and are acknowledged.

Nirvana was much needed at the time, the million bands it spawned might not be as great...but anyway Hair Metal was on it's way out...thank God...
And good thing we can expect lyrical depth and complex music...
Do you want to hear three chords and "I like girls & booze" sung ad infinitum?

My advice to you regarding the 80s is to put aside Whitesnake and get some Replacements albums. You'll see what you missed in the 80s.
