Some people in this forum have some pathological and obsesive attitudes........... I enjoy everything of this group, some tunes are nice, some are worse, when they were young they were obviously much better (as every group by that time), but i think they have a long career and experience, so every music and performance has it's own charm.

Music and show is for enjoy, not for analysis............... Some people analyze and disect every minute of their music............. maybe RS arfe very tired of these attitudes and simply they do not take care of this obsesive-nostalgic forum.

Maybe people from this forum needs more sex (i'm included)

The music of The Beatles is over-analyzed which I think has done more harm than good. I've read all the books and it's been quite interesting and fascinating. But I can't really enjoy the music like I did before. I think too much when I listen these days.

I don't want to destroy the music of The Rolling Stones in the same way. I just want The Stones to keep rocking in my ears and keep on affecting my emotions.

You can bet your life the stones analyzed the blues and r&b music they loved so much and which brought them altogether. Understanding what is happening musically can lead to further enjoyment and appreciation.

Also, learning about their lives, their interactions with one another and others only adds to this as you get to know more about the odd gang of people that has been and continues to be The Rolling Stones.

Andrew nailed it on the first album cover...

The Rolling Stones are more than just a group - they are a way of life.

Doubtlessly the reason for their earlier announcement of no tour for 2010.

Just had to say it - it's getting so over-beaten, I feel like my favorite album of all time has been tortuously over-analyzed and re-digested - over hyped, over revered, over everythinged

I enjoy my favourite album to get all that hype, but I can relate to your feelings. It starts to sound like EXILE is the ONLY album that matters. All the glory to holy EXILE but there are others which - unfortunately - have not such a fascinating story and myth written all over it.

When actually EXILE gained its incredible mythical reputation? Was it that only after The Stones having done few lesser albums - GOATS, ONLY R&R, B&B - that its greatness and uniqueness was generally recognized? And was SOME GIRLS the first album ever was recognized by the critics as "Best Since EXILE"?

I have a kind of theory why EXILE didn't make instant impact - despite being double, etc. - that the vitality and greatness EXILE has was still at the time of its relaese in 1972 taken for granted; the people were treated with a sequence of their best music ever: superb singles and albums one after other... So the people were more like seeing the failures it had: not, for example, having such out-standing tracks like "Sympathy", "Gimme Shelter" or "Brown Sugar" in it? So the Stones needed to low - of course, that was not intentional - their quality standard to make sure people to recognize their absulute peaks?

At the time I joined the fan club - early 80's - EXILE was reviewed and seing as one of their best works but it surely didn't have the fame it would gain later. It had a kind of cult reputation as the Stones specialists' favourite. (At that time if any album was seen their best or most classical that was BEGGARS BANQUET). I think the reputation of EXILE somehow is linked to the BIG recognition of Keith's role within the Stones. The 80's - if anything - was a 'Keith Richards is the Rolling Stones' decade. Keith may had made all the things during the 70's to gain the reputation but 80's was the time those achievements were recognized by the big audience and media. He already was the star of the 1981/82 tour and Keith's star just seemed to rise through the decade while Mick did his best to ruin his own. It is no co-incidence that at the time of making DIRTY WORK, it was really was described as "Keith's album" and all the references went to EXILE. (Now we see its weak standard due to Mick's absence and zero interest but at the time we thought: "yeah, now when Keith is on the charge and Mick is not hassling around we will get a new EXILE, yeah!!" )

I would say the very moment when EXILE turned to be THE album of the Stones is ROLLING STONE magazine top 100 list of best rock records of all-time (or something like that) released probably in the late 80's where EXILE made the top three with SGT. PEPPER and NEVER MIND THE BULLOCKS. I remember seeing it and thinking "wow!" - is EXILE really so big album these days... (before that I hade tought it being like the favourite of hardcore fans, some kind of a cult album, but not recognized by the 'main stream'.)

Any thoughts?

I think it's interesting that Stones fans are intuitively attracted to Exile whether or not it's percieved as a cult album. If I was the only person to like Exile on earth, I would still be convinced that I was right and all others wrong. The "cult" is fun but the album doesn't really need it to be famous. Great pieces of art or thinking will get recognized for their own merits sooner or later, and I see the "cult" as a "proof" of this recognition takíng place globally.

I have hated the Beatles hype for ages now, but the hype sells records.

But there is still a hardcore Rolling Stones fan in me who is afraid that there will be a lot of disappointed people who might buy a copy of pure interest. For many I'm afraid EXILE will have the fate of James Joyce's ODYSSEIA - having bought because the critics say it best goddamn token in its type, but a hell to read through... EXILE is not an easy-listening record at all. (I almost hope that the item in hand would be STICKY FINGERS, which is very much easier to cope with by not used ears...)

With respect but I think you are wrong here. A new Rolling Stones album will not gather much interest or drives people for a 'serious' analysis, not even if it is "best since EXILE" (like they all are...). For example, if we look what happened to A BIGGER BANG. It went quite unnotced by big media. Here at IORR among us die-hards there was a lot of discussion before the record was released - as there always is before a new Stones product - but the enthusiasism died quite quickly after its release. There was not much to be talked about, really.

This album (EOMS) was not wellcome in 1972. Just R&R with lot of "filler" tunes . No great singles, no too much generational hymns. There are a lot of dissapointing critics of everyone at the beginning. It was after a lot of years when those fillers songs among other gems just show us RS as they are, and that is why we hard core RS's fans love so much this work. It is no commercial, it is not a workin looking for succes, it was kust a band playing on their own pleasure.
History puts in first place albums like BB, LIB and SF, because they were masterpieces, and because after them the music changed. There is no change in style, composition, guitar playing and technique in EOMS; but is our favourite album because we find our group in a state of grace justa like if they were playing in a pub.

And to continue a bit: if a new Rolling Stones record is to be released it is only to be done to "justify" a new tour, and all the hype will directed to the tour - touring has been the priority of the Stones activities for 20 years (that's where the big money is.). Also in this sense deluxe EXILE is a great expection to a rule of recent decades; very rarely the interest is concentrated to recorded music.

This is very true, i enjoyed RS much more when i was a beginner in guitar playing; now happens to under-apreciatte guitar licks that i considerer fabulous in the past. New music is analyzed under microscopy as well.

Music is made for people, not for musicians. Once KR told that if you play guitar thinking that in the public are better guitarists analyzing your technique tehn you are in ruin. Everytime you play you must think and feel as if you were teh best, and it is true. That might explain over-posing and so on..........

I know what you mean, sometimes when you analyse some song way too much, it looses it's sense. You should just enjoy the song and not wonder who plays what, what is that sound, where was it recorded, how, why...

If they continue to make archive releases, they hype will be lower for every release, as the news factor will be diminished. Exile is also one of the most legendary albums the Stones put out, so the hype is a little bigger than it would have been if they'd released Sticky Fingers or Some Girls.

Is your favourite album of all time the additional disc on the 2010 Exile re-issue ?

Seriously, I haven't made too many comments on IORR about my thoughts on the bonus-disc; but I surely appreciate reading other peoples opinion, here; they're very diverse

Well then don't read 'em!
Exile is exciting as ever and we who love it have our privilegies to write about without anyone judging us! So, if you don't like it then don't read it!

Doxa - LOVE how you think - always

--and don't get me wrong - I like the release and the attitude behind it (and the extras) But the hype just serves to demystify some of it, in my opinion

it we had 200 threads on the mona lisa, and you got sucked into reading them - you'd be sick of the mona lisa at the end of it, that's all -

--I should have added - also the fact that this seems to have been a Universal idea and not a Stones idea irks me a bit as well - if the inspiration had been the stones wanting to share as opposed to Universal wanting to make splash/mega bucks, it might feel better - when i keep hearing (10-20 times?) Mick saying "they came to me and asked what we had" - ugh
