FOUND: The Flying Burrito Bros - THE REAL 6 Days On The Road, Altamont 1969
Posted by: Eleanor Rigby ()
Date: December 20, 2009 06:40

Hi everyone,

There's been much discussion about the version of "Six Days.." by the FBB in the Gimme Shelter movie and whether it's the actual live version they performed that fateful day or if it's the studio version.

I have maintained it was the studio version as I'm a fan of the band's work and have alot of their albums.

I received a bootleg a long time ago and tacked on the end of one of their Frisco concerts was a live version of "Six Days On The Road"...then quite amazingly I hear the famous tired voice of Sam Cutler reporting about the birth of a baby !! Then even more bizarre is a radio broadcaster reporting this moment!!

With the recent TradersDen download of a new tape of the concert by some guy recording it for a local radio station, it now dawned on me that this is in fact the TRUE live version of this song recorded by the same guy! And the song in the GS movie is rubbish - it is the studio version.

I have created a windows media player version for people to check it out.

If you want FLAC or equivalent let me know.

Regards,
ER

THANK YOU for posting this. I always suspected as much with regards to the version in Gimmee Shelter.

You know, even without Cutler and the DJ at the end, I thought that it "sounded" like the other Altamont recordings I've heard... Cold, heavy December air...

yeah I saw that Japanese CD/DVD...looks interesting but it will just be a combination of wat is now "out there".

This aud recording of "Six Days.." has been around for ages (well I've had it for at least 6 years)...I'm guessing bootleggers and the like have just assumed the Gimme Shelter version of Six Days is the Burritos performance of the song but in soundboard quality and never bothered to check other sources.

Mathijs - is this source that you mention the Gimme Shelter version of the song?

I am not a FBB expert, but this recording to me is the audience recording of part of the FBB set. I never compared it to the GS version.

ok - thanks. I have had that version (well it has the same artwork) for ages and it includes the "gimme shelter" Six Days...but if you think it's an aud. rec then I might have to download it all again!

Another question for everyone : how many songs did the pre-show acts play?
the Burritos played 4, CSNY played 4, Airplane 6, Santana 2...would like to know the extents of each of the pre-show acts setlists as this seems pretty short...

thanks

ER--you are right--I stand corrected

more evidence of how trumped up the Maysles Bros made Altamont - and of course, The Burritos did not kick things off, as is blatantly suggested here--they played AFTER CSNY when things had already gone to hell--the bros. played way too fast and loose with the facts for me--it makes Gimme Shelter a docu-drama--not a documentary

I believe that 3-cd/1 dvd set just came out because one of my Japanese distributors has it listed (for $80). The front cover is on their new release page.

Yeah they might have had no choice...perhaps the music was faulty when compiling the movie and they fell back to using the studio version...who knows.
I remember JumpingKentFlash actually had a response from the Maysles about what other footage they had...perhaps the Maysles might be able to answer some questions about the FBB's music?

Note: There is also some extra Altamont footage I have on DVD of the Angels & the crowd with the Jefferson Airplane playing "Other Side Of This Life"...which sounds completely different to the version on the Gimme Shelter movie!!!!

I just received this release. It is pretty good. What is amazing about it, is that they are using different sources. In mid-song it will make a radical switch. It ALMOST sounds like they are going from SB to AUD, winking smiley
On "Stray Cat" e.g. the verses are like a monitor mix, and it goes to the guitar solo in C and it jumps into a wide audience type recording.

Am I the only one here who enjoys an audience recording in complete form only, and a soundboard source in complete form, but not a combination of the 2 ?

I hate it when bootleggers have a mix of all sources..one or the other IMO.

Great version but ultimately hampered by lazy lead vocals. Gram was a little inconsistent.

Check out this version though after Gram left with Chris Hillman on vocals and Al Perkins on pedal steel and Byron Berlin on fiddle:

Agree with you ER, but I hate not having a complete show including all the bewtween song banter even more so I can live with a audience and SB mix if that means I get a complete show.....

I knew that I was not seeing things that day it was broadcast on cable back in the early 80's. I saw this footage as well only on that one cable broadcast. What I remember even more than the extra footage on the print that I saw that day was a completely different soundtrack mix to all the music. Is this evident on the print on the DVD that you just got? Believe me the mix and the songs sounded different.
