Sympathy Question
Posted by: gostonesforever ()
Date: December 2, 2009 17:03

Hi There:

I am wondering if anyone knows why the verse below is no longer included in Symapthy For The Devil?

I shouted out, (whoo whoo)
"Who killed the Kennedys?" (whoo whoo)
When after all (whoo whoo)
It was you and me (whoo whoo)

Thanks for your answer.

Too political?

Good question - I have no idea - I wonder if it has something to do with Mick's friendship with Lee Radziwell.

I'm sure someone on here will know.

"is no longer included in Symapthy For The Devil"

When the song is performed live on stage, the line is dropped.

sometimes he sings it and sometimes he doesn't - if memory serves it's been that way since 1969

I've never heard him leave it out. I'm guessing that whole bit that was cut out for GYYYO was because of Altamont. Think they'd put it back in by now.

you have to listen more carefully these days - he doesn't shout it out, he whispers it...

Having seen a couple of ABB shows I can't remember one where this verse was left out.

Give us an example.

Maybe the Kennedy familie ask him?

Pretty please Mr. Jagger don't say that line ever again?

Strange, since Mick sings from the Autocue you'd expect the lyrics to be the same throughout the tour

Here comes the bus

It is missing on Flashpoint... and sometimes, in some shows too.
This line is somehow a mystical point of the song! :-)

And - sorry and blame me for this! - our singer in our band also don't used to sing this (no idea, why, just checked it)

I haven't listened to Flashpoint in 30 years so I don't know if it's missing.

Wow - you stop listening to it 12 years before it was released!

He leaves it out most of the time now, I actually can't think of a recent version where he sings it. He doesn't sing it on Shine A Light.

Well, doggone it, I must be hearing it in my head! I dont think it oughta be left out though. Mick was right at the time. As a society, we were ALL guilty in the 60s.IMHO.

Dave - I never caught that before. Now I'm going to have to listen harder at the many versiomns I have, legal and not so legal.

Richard - also in NB, Canada

Four and a half minutes of the Tokyo performance released on Flashpoint was edited out, but you're correct - even in the unedited 10-minute long performance of it, he still doesnt sing it.

The verse has been left out in most versions for quite a few tours now as far as I can see.

Thanks for your responses even if "why" was not answered. I have seen the Stones 3 times this decade-Montreal 2003, Moncton 2005 and Halifax (in the rain) 2006. The verse was not sung in any of these shows.

It is not sung on the Licks DVDs, Biggest Bang DVDs nor Shine a Light.

Still curious I guess......

Robert Kennedy was shot while they were recording Sympathy, and the line was changed from one Kennedy to plural.

maybe that bothers him.

he never sings "hear him whip the women" either - clearly he doesn't like every line he's written

I'm pretty sure he's sung the far more risque "I can see you're just 15 years old" line in that ode to underage sex in Stray Cat Blues in recent years.

>> I'm pretty sure he's sung the far more risque "I can see you're just 15 years old"<<

smile: i wonder if he's ever considered updating that line, like the rinsed-out blonde in Spider & the Fly :E

meanwhile, whipping women is not "risque", it's violent. see [www.iorr.org]

"meanwhile, whipping women is not "risque", it's violent".

But it can also be mutually enjoyable!
