i know there are some deadheads on here and i had a question about the europe '72 live album. is this 100% live or are there overdubs?

Although I can't say for certain, the Dead's "warts and all" approach to live recordings would leave me to believe that its free of overdubs. This was the band at their peak (or at the beginning of their peak) and they were playing some pretty hot s$#t.

no, I believe I read somewhere that they recorded over some tracks in a funky castle or something, so not purely live. they released "live without a net" in late 80's (?) that definitely did not have any overdubs.

Wikepedia states that many vocals were overdubbed.

my first-ever GD album - the first of countless hundreds. for the 72 european tour, i prefer hundred year hall - definitely no overdubbing there....

Always loved Cosmic Charlie on that one. There are lots of releases from '72 available these days, all good.

Definitely overdubs. Harmony vocals and Merl Saunders overdubbed some B-3 organ.
According to McNally's book A Long Strange Trip "the band re-created the stage setup of instruments in the studio to approximate the original ambiance."

Overdubbed? I read the same thing more than once, but really, with all of those songs that weren't available elsewhereat the time on official vinyl, I'd say it's more forgivable than GYYYO or LYL where you can totally hear Mick's original vocals bleeding through, even when Mick is singing different lyrics!!

Vocals were overdubbed to smooth out the rough edges; I've never heard the Dead sing that well live.

Do you mean Mister Charlie? I don't thing Cosmic Charlie was on Europe '72.

One of my favorite Dead albums. Alot of new Garcia/Hunter material was released on it (Jack Straw, Tennesee Jed, He's Gone)

I'm sure he meant Pigpen's 'Mr. Charlie'.

I used to have the three LP version, but I only recognize a few of these songs as being on it. Is this a 're-release' ?

This album was Hundred Year Hall. It was released in 1996; it was also recorded in Europe 1972 but not the same album as the three LP release with the ice cream cone being smashed on head cover.

Likely they did. The live audience is mixed down and out of much of the recording too. Isolated, the future classics like 'Bertha' ''Jed' and 'Jack Straw' sound almost like studio recordings.
