Cliff and the Shadows

Now I know some of you are going to be having a laugh at this post...
But earlier this week I took my Mum along to see Cliff Richard and the Shadows at Sheffield Arena.I got into the Shadows around 1980 and have always loved the guitar playing of Hank Marvin.I was well impressed with the performance on Wednesday night. It was a set mainly comprising stuff from their joint early career, plus solo stuff from the Shadows. In terms of the history of rock n 'roll they are worth seeing.Check out"move it".The gems such as "Bachelor boy","summer holiday","young ones" are all there. The Shadows classics "Apache" and "Wonderland" were included.

But what amazed me was how talented the individual guys are:Marvin,Bennet,Welsh and Richard. And they can still play.Hank Marvin in particular, amazing. They might be old,but they still deliver and have the skills they always had.Not resting on their laurels.Mr Richards take note.

This is just what i was talking about last week in another post, Cliff and The Shadows are still pulling in the crowds and performing well, they are older than The Stones so there is no reason why The Stones can't be touring in 5 years from now. Who knows?

Some may laugh, I'm not one of them. I'm taking an old schoolfriend/girlfriend along to see them at Wembley Arena a week today, it's for her 54th birthday ... she's 5 months younger than me to the day. I'm looking forward to it. Allowing for tastes, you can't knock Cliff & the Shads for competence, delivery, the works really. And you ain't gonna get another chance after this to see 'em, I think "this is it". At least that's what they're saying .......... !!

it's a great shame Jet Harris has been snubbed.

I find myself agreeing with you on a lot of things Ade: but this is not one of them.

He left the Shadows with Tony Meehan to better himself and grab the limelight. He succeeded for a while and then fizzled out. He can’t just expect to jump aboard again, IMO. The Shads moved on without him. Its just like Robbie wanting to be back with Take That.

Saw them at the O2 few weeks back (we're all crawling out of the closet now...).
The Shadows stole the show - they were absolutely brilliant, Hank is a genius.
The tour is a sell out as well, which is quite amazing.

Adrian - I know Jet was snubbed by the band for this tour, but he did leave in 1962 and at one point, allegedly, he was having it away with Cliffs girl friend (funny, never knew he had any), so there's quite a lot of water under that particular bridge. But sadly, I have to report that Jet now has cancer of the throat which he is having treatment for. Lets hope he makes a full recovery.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written

Most underrated band .....................this is the BAND from the early sixties that a lot of our heroes start to play the guitar

Uh, I don't think so. The Stones as a whole are not as healthy as Cliff and the Shadows. I don't doubt that Mick could keep going for another 10 years easy. Maybe not in the way he has up through the last tour, running around all over the place, but I don't doubt he could still put on a pretty energetic show well into his 70's. And maybe Charlie too. But Keith and Ronnie? Ronnie can't stay sober for more than a few months, and have you seen Keith lately? You think his condition is going to get better, especially his fingers? People on here already complain about how crappy his playing is, you think it's suddenly going to improve? Please. I don't know the ins and outs of Cliff and the Shadows entire history, and how it has affected their health, but I think it's safe to say that you can't compare the Stones to a group like them. I seriously doubt if they've abused themselves the way the Stones have, and they must be in much better health, on average, than Ronnie, and especially Keith. You can't look at a group like the Shadows and say if they are older and still deliver, then the Stones can too. It just doesn't work, the Stones are a completely different animal.

My departing comment on the previous post:"Mr Richards take note" was referring to precisely that. The last tour we had Keef in many shows, well passed his sell by date.I am sorry but I am not paying good money for a half assed performance."Look at me I am Keef, and my legacy".I want to see him perform, not just pay big bucks because of what he could once do.
As regards Mick and Charlie, those guys are true professionals. And even Ronnie can still entertain.
